Reading material for birth partner/coach

I've decided to have a very close friend at my labor as my birth coach. I think it would be best for everyone if my husband can focus on experiencing the birth and his own emotions rather than trying to console me. I've chosen a friend who is strong but gentle, very compassionate and very generous. I have no doubts that she will come through for me and be there when I need her. She's incredibly reliable and responsible. I asked for her help and she was raring to get started researching and learning about how she can help.

This is my first birth and I'd like to have an epidural-free vaginal birth at a hospital. Homebirth is not an option, neither is a birthing center. I'm planning to deliver with a midwife group at the local hospital.

I need resources to educate my friend on the birth process and some practical advice for supporting a natural labor. What books/videos would you recommend?

As an aside, she and I are both medical professionals so I'd rather avoid books that spend the majority of the time on bashing the medical community. I need thorough, physiologically correct information and tips so she can support me through the stages of birth.

Any ideas?

Penny Simkin's book "The Birth Partner" is wonderful. She has another book called "Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn" which is also good, but the first would be my choice. It's supposed to be for my DH to read since he's my birth partner, but I think it's great!

I second, The Birth Partner, it is written with a hospital birth in mind and is also gender neutral/ suitable for a partner or doula, not just a husband. It is simply packed with helpful information about how to support a laboring woman both physically and emotionally. If I could only have one book, that would be it!

also, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, especially the second half, so that she knows your body and your baby both are so perfectly designed and ready for birth.

Great! Thanks so much. I was so into researching books last time I was pregnant... this time I'm such a slacker. Already 23 weeks and haven't picked up a book yet. I guess I should get started!

The Birth Partner is fantastic! My partner loved it and I (as the pregnant one) also found it very helpful.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope you have a wonderful birth.
