Nursing on and off after weaning?

Thread Starter
My 20-month-old just stopped nursing a couple of days ago. He seems to be very ready to wean - he just doesn't seem interested anymore. If he does decide he wants to nurse, however, I don't want to refuse him. Is it common for babies/toddlers to nurse off and on for a little while before weaning completely? And if so, how long is a little while - days, weeks, months?

I understand that my milk is slowly going to dry up, but maybe he'll just want to nurse for comfort every so often. Should I let him, or should I gently distract him and move on to another activity? My instinct is telling me I should definitely let him nurse if he asks to - am I right?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me.

It's very common for them to start skipping sessions, then days, then weeks ... and so on. My DD stopped nursing daily at age 3 but didn't stop nursing forever until 3.5 years. DS was later but followed a similar (slower) pattern: he stopped nursing daily sometime around 4.5 years but didn't stop nursing completely til closer to 5.5. Yours is young and could just be on a mini nursing strike, or could be at the start of weaning, but I (personally) would just follow his lead and nurse when he asks. And just know it's normal for them to start skipping days even if they're not ready to completely wean yet.
