Do you find yourself a spectacle when babywearing? - Page 2

Most people where I live use Bjorns if they babywear at all, so I get lots of comments and questions, usually people are just curious about it. I did get one clerk in a store lecture me about how I was ruining my 2 month old's spine by carrying him in a cradle carry in my ring sling. I asked her what position she thought babies were in when they were in the womb and was that ruining their spine?
I get more comments when I wear my Zolowear ring sling because it is a beautiful bright blue silk fabric. Also with the Ergo. Lots of comments about why I let my 1 year old nap in the Ergo instead of a crib.

I love it.

I'm in Austin, TX, and when DD (10 mos.) and I go to Target to walk around EVERY. SATURDAY. MORNING, i always see at least one other babywearing mama. It's wonderful. I feel like we're sharing an incredible, intimate secret.

We are in San Francisco Bay area and there are quite a few of baby wearers here. I don't see wraps so much, though. Except one time this mom TRIED to put her toddler on her back at the mall an nearly dropped him like 3-4x. I was walking by very slowly with my mouth totally hanging open. Jeez!

I mostly use Ergo or hotslings and comments I get are about DD not so much about Ergo or sling. When we flew to Los Angeles the security people were totally fine about it and let me carry DD (then 11 mo) in my Ergo with NO problems.

To get out of baby talk when baby is sleeping, I usually mouth or whisper, "she is sleeping", which is obvious but sometimes people need to hear that to register that in their brain.

Yup we get lots of stares and quite a few comments. I'm wearing dd less and less these days since she's wanting to walk more but when she was younger I could rarely go out without being stopped and asked about my carriers.

In fact my sister wanted to try a sling one time and commented on how she noticed people doing double and triple takes. I personally loved when I wore dd on my back and people who were approaching me were obviously trying to figure out what I was wearing (I usually wrap) then I could hear them go "Ohhhh" as the passed me and saw dd. Now she's so big tat she's easy to see from the front.

I'm guilty of asking questions about people's carriers because I have been trying to determine which to get for myself. I decided to get the Ergo. Now I usually just smile when I see people babywearing.

I'm in Austin too, yay!! I live in the more rural area though, so I get lots of stares and looks and whispers and such. It seems like the closer to the city we go, the less shocking it is. And like the other Austinite, we see other babywearers regularly in the city.

I totally got in touch with my exhibitionist side as a babywearer. I especially loved throwing my little babies up on my back in a high back carry in a mei tai. "Don't worry, folks, I'm a trained professional!"

I certainly have gotten my fair share of dumb comments ("can she breathe in there?!?!" etc.) but mostly the attention has been positive. One of my favorite things when we lived in the DC area was how many women from other cultures/countries would come up to me and talk about babywearing in their own countries. It was great!

I just had my first baby nine days ago. Last night, I wore him in the Moby to go get pizza. Tonight, I went to Wal-Mart (which I usually avoid at all costs, but I had baby shower gift cards). Everyone was staring at me. I live in a super non-crunchy area. I have never seen a babywearer here at all. I didn't even know babywearing existed until I got pregnant and found this board!

I wore both of my kids around the country and ALWAYS got every comment in the book, from curiosity to animosity and knowing glances from moms who wore their own babies and missed those days.
Now I AM the mom that looks at other moms wearing their babies and I am so proud and happy for that motherbaby couple!
If I happen to be wearing my almost 3 year old in the Ergo, I often give impromptu lessons in baby wearing! (this has happened at least 5 times)

I got applause!

I get a lot of attention with my babywearing. I always wear my babes on my back in a wrap and get lots of questions and stares which I usually don't mind since I love to spread the word on babywearing.

My fave moment was a couple of weeks ago at the mall at a very crowded food court I put my 6 month old on my back and wrapped her. When I looked up a group of elderly chinese people were watching and started clapping! I even got a thumbs up from one of the old ladies It sure made my day.

I have of course gotten rude/negative comments as well but it is all apart of doing something that most people just aren't used to!

Many people smile and some say that my DD has the best seat in the house. And they are right!
