The Feeding Drama

I have these two babies. They didn't gain weight well between weeks #2 and #4, so we supplement. It's not that much, really. They get 3 or 4 bottles a day, 1 or 2 of which are high calorie formula, the rest are EBM. We're working on slowly going to more sessions at the breast, but right now, this works *great* for us.

One of them, however, has awful reflux and *hates* bottles. Of course it's the smaller one, so it's even more important we make sure he gets the extra supplementation. We tried zantac, which did practically nothing, and now our wonderfully supportive ped has moved him onto prevacid, but our insurance insists we order it through mail, and so it'll be 10-15 days before we get it. Bummer.

In the meantime, I'm going on another bottle search. I've tried so many. Playtex Vent-Air, Soothie, Nuby Soft Touch, Breastflow. None of these worked for him at all. (My other boy will pretty much eat from whatever is put into his mouth, bless him.) The absolute best he does is from the latex NUK nipples, the vents on the silicone ones aren't adequate enough. The wide-mouth NUK bottles are so-so at best for him. As it stands, he still takes nearly 45 minutes to eat his meals from a bottle.

I'd like to try the Dr. Brown's system, but I am *so* happy with the glass Evenflo bottles I've picked up, because I can put them down into hot water (I use a dip-sized crock pot with water) and they won't float or fall over. They also clean up nicer, I think. I thought I'd read that you can use the system on top of one of these bottles, but it doesn't seem to work because of the extra length. And I've read complaints about the labeling washing off of the glass Dr. Brown's bottles. It'd also be nice because then I can store the milk i pump in the glass bottles I already have and not buy so many new bottles or use bags, etc, though I suppose I could do that and pour the warmed milk into the plastic bottles.

What should I do? Suggestions? (Apologies for rambling, thanks everyone!!)

I'm not sure about the bottles since we haven't had to go that route, but have you tried an SNS? Maybe he would be able to take the higher calorie formula better from the breast instead of trying to find the perfect bottle?

We use Dr. Browns and it works really well for my boy. I have the wide neck ones. He doesn't collect nearly as much air this way. With playtex I had to burp him a lot and he had loud burps, with Dr. Browns, not so much. I wanted to glass ones by Dr. Browns, but my husband was against that because he was worried about them breaking.

my DS had horrible reflux and would refuse to nurse, and even refused when I tried a bottle of EBM. We had a horrible few months where he would scream each time he nursed, until he was put on Prevacid. It took 2 weeks, but after that NO MORE SCREAMING!

I would also look into food sensitivities, dairy being a very common one, in your refluxy babe. Cutting out dairy for several months really helped my DS as well.

FWIW, we never had problems gaining with the reflux, and I believe it is because DS would nurse so well at night. Do you cosleep? Cosleeping and side-nursing saved us during those rough months.

hope you get things figured out soon!

DS wouldn't take a bottle for months, and then we bought the Born Free brand. He'll take them begrudgingly, but it's better than not at all. And they're glass, which I prefer. FWIW...

DD was a refluxer who actually got worse on Zantac. The Prevacid did wonders for her, so I'm hoping you'll find a solution in that once you get the medication.

(The reflux ended up being caused by a dairy intolerance, and once I cut it out of my diet completely, the reflux cleared up.)

My DS has reflux and never learned to nurse at all, despite the help of several lactation consultants and a feeding therapist. To this day I am pumping breastmilk (he's 7 months now). It was so hard to deal with, and I just have the one baby. My heart really goes out to you dealing with that, it must be tough with another baby who also needs your attention!

In any case, we also tried several nipples before finding a good one. He did decently with Medela slow flow nipples; one of the consultants we worked with said many reflux babies do well with that one. The winner for us, though, ended up being one of the cheapest ones out there! Evenflo sells packs of just plain brown slow flow nipples, and those have worked better than any other for us! We bought Evenflo bottles, but the nipples that worked didn't come with the bottles - they were sold in a separate pack. The other thing that helped was just plain time... the older DS has gotten, the more manageable his reflux has become.

Good luck getting it figured out!

another vote for cutting out dairy

DD was on prevacid & zantac and it seemed like the would be working for a couple days and then she was back to refluxing/spitting up all the time. I cut dairy out of my diet and although it did take 6 full weeks she was a totally different baby.

She would never take a bottle...stubborn that one!

DS uses the glass evenflo bottles and we like those.
