Cervix checkers

I got to talking to my midwife with DS1. She asked about dilation/effacement. I haven't been checked by my midwife in three weeks, though I have checked myself here and there. She asked if I've recently checked myself. I was curious so after getting off the phone I went to check.

It's pretty easy to reach on the toilet with my leg propped on the bathtub ledge. When I checked this last time I did not feel anything protruding or a tube like structure at all. When I felt around the vaginal wall and traced my finger up near the cervical opening there was no cervix. No real thickness to it. I can feel what was the opening of cervix. I recognize the texture of it, but it's more flat. My BOW is bulging and his head is right there. If there's no thickness would that translate to fully effaced or almost fully effaced?

I tried measuring dilation. It was pretty tricky to get my forefinger on the other side since it's shorter and the angle wasn't great. I had to use my middle finger to reach the other side and then place my forefinger where my middle finger stopped. I was able to make a peace sign. I reconstructed the feel of my fingers spread apart and measured. Came out to about 5 cm.

For you ladies that check were you pretty accurate? I've measured all the cms on a piece of paper and measured my fingers to get a feel for the spread of each cm.

It isn't abnormal for me so I wouldn't be surprised if I was 4-5 cm. I was 5 cm for a week with DD1 and was pitocin induced at 6.5 cm because I wasn't contracting. Similar with DD2. AROM at 6 cm to start labor.

Another question, if the cervix is thinned out a lot would there even be a big difference between the internal and external os? I couldn't distinguish a difference. I couldn't feel anything protruding in front of the BOW.

Gosh well, if you're that effaced, you're pretty much good to go, regardless.

I have read that effacement comes hand in hand with dilation, so both are more or less occurring at the same time. For example, it'd be pretty weird to be 5cm and only 50% effaced, KWIM?

I myself am quite anterior, which is good, very soft and as of today can get my middle finger on in there, which is quite a change from yesterday. Not that I am poking violently, you know. Just feeling with clean fingers. I'd estimate my Bishop's score to be about a 6 or so at this stage. I'm EPO'ing it up here because I am being checked on Wednesday and this time - and only this time - I'm being induced, and want a decent score (which you already know anyway). If we're good to go for an induction sooner rather than later, I am happy! I really would like her to be born before the new year. You know how it feels to be pregnant after a full term stillbirth - every moment, you're wondering if the heart's stopped, or something... It's gnarly.

Anyway I am rambling!

I think that when the cervix is thinned out, the external OS would probably be completely un-palpable. It'd be so straight in line that you wouldn't know where it'd be at all.

I mean at this stage, would you want your MW to break the water at all? I expect it'd be hard and fast, but at your effacement and dilation I bet that'd be all it'd take. I know how anxious you are (like me) to hold your baby boy asap!

Hey, mama!

How you describe it in the bold part is exactly what it feels like. I'm not sure if she'd just rupture my membranes. She said stripping tends to put her clients in labor. I just wonder how long it will take to get into labor. Since I have very fast births she wants to time it just right.

She knows I'm done and just want him out. I don't want to have to worry or wonder anymore or wake up every so many hours to nudge him and get him to move.

She said she'd bring the birth pool by, but I'm uncertain about it. She said the Aquadoula takes time to set up and about 2 hours to fill. Yikes. I'd rather just use the shower. It was pretty effective with Evey.

I've been getting some decent contractions and feeling tons of pressure and have this constant backache. I hope it means something good.

I can't wait 'til our little ones are here!

Me neither - CANNOT wait! I'd actually you know, even be open to a Foley induction if my cervix is a bit less dilated than it wants to be. Just want to be done with this gestational period, though of course I completely adore feeling her move and everything else about pregnancy: just not the constant fear of her not moving any more... I am sure I'll be a bit less paranoid next time lol!

Hope this is it for you. I have to say, the birth pool for me last time was tremendous for the short amount of "real" labor I got to experience. I wish the hospital had one... It doesn't, so it'll be the shower for me!

We're getting there. Got a doc's appointment tomorrow at 3.30 central time, so fingers crossed for some kind of good progress then...argh!
