Help me figure housekeeping out!

I'm a new Mom, trying to get the hang of this whole household management thing. I'm in the process of putting together a housekeeping schedule (using a lot of flyladys stuff) and just creating habits so that i can stay sane and my house can stay clean!
Now will someone please tell me if it's possible to get the hang of this so thta I really feel like I have a bit of control over my household functioning well? It doesn't have to be perfect, just decent.
I just remember my Mom always being overwhelmed and stressed and angry with all the housework she couldn't keep up with. My worst fear is becoming like that, but I can already see the tendencies popping up!
So have any of you more seasoned moms BTDT? Did you get it figured out? Any advice? Any resources or books you recommend?
I'm all ears!

Well it took me awhile to really get some systems down that really work for me and the kind of things my family does. Some basics are: keep on top of the kitchen, do a load of laundry every day and have an empty basket available for the times when you want to do something like vacuum but are held back by the clutter that you don't want to sort. I almost never walk up or down the stairs without having something else in my hands to put away or throw out (one of my biggest problems are the recycables upstairs that tend to loiter). My girls are finally old enough to help out with some of my most detested tasks like putting away laundry. It is so nice to make them put away their own now. I also have certain days I do chores like grocery shopping, maintainence cleaning and such.

How new? Because the first 6 months or so, forget about the house.

Then, the PP said everything I wanted to say. Especially....

Those 3 things will keep the majority of it from piling up and causing chaos.

I posted a schedule of chores on my fridge. It balances out to 1 or 2 main things a day.

Monday: Bathroom 1 and clean that bathrooms floor
Tuesday: Dust, roll trash out after 6pm (that entails taking trash out that needs to go out as well)
Wednesday: Bathroom 2 and that bathrooms floor
Thursday: Kitchen
Friday: Vacuum and mop kitchen and laundry rooms floor
Sunday: Sheets and towels

We don't clean Saturday, it's Sabbath

I know my laundry schedule, diapers every other day and close every 2 days.

It may change from time to time, but that's it really.

Everyday things for me are the kitchen (usually 2x a day, morning and before bed including loading/unloading dish washer), doing 2 loads of laundry a day (start to finish -- meaning get it folded/put away), make beds upon waking, do a quick tidy 1-2x a day (depending on size of home and how many kids...for you, probably just once).

I organized everything into days -- specific tasks for specific days and posted it here: http://naturallythriftyathome.blogspot.com/2009/12/new-ways-
to-schedule.html

Once a week:
Dust, vacuum, mop (if needed), clean bathrooms, organize each room/tidy/clean, change sheets, take out trash
