2 year old boy present?

DH's brother has 2 kids - 2 yr old boy and 7 yr old girl. they are mainstream. they like crap that we don't like. I have daughters, so I don't even know what boys like.

We bought automoblox, thinking they were cool and good ... but I looked at them closely, and they come apart REALLY easily, so I feel like it's a stupid gift for a 2 year old now.

We bought a cool sketch pad thing for the girl, hopefully it will get here in time! If it doesn't, I have piggie paint nail polish that I could give her ...

My other gifts for my own kids are all too girly, except for a couple finger puppets: an owl and a baby seal. But those seem really like a lame gift idea for a hyper 2 year old boy.

In my gift-stash, I found some old toddler crayons in fire-truck-hats-theme, and I looked for a coloring book, but all I could find was a small blank drawing pad. again: lame.

Only other thing I've found in my gift-stash is a DK sticker book on "creepy crawlies".

I went to Target today, and I couldn't find anything that wasn't ridiculous. DH wants to ask his brother what we should give him, but I'm afraid he's going to suggest some crap that I refuse to buy.

help!!!

I think the automoblox is a fine gift. I thought about getting one for my DS (21 1/2 months old), but didn't because there was so much to choose from and our budget is kind of limited. We still might get him one for when he turns 2 at the end of February. They roll so nicely!

you don't think the wheels will come off too easily?

if it's what I'm thinking of, it's not a big deal. When DH was in the hospital for his heart cath in August, they had one in every color in the play room on his floor of the children's hospital. He LOVED them. They seemed very sturdy. And yes, the front and rear ends pulled off, but then we could put the two ends together without the body and have a short car. The only thing I would have changed about them was making all the pieces interchangeable so that if the kids wanted to, they could make all sorts of unusual car combinations.
