toy sharing and molluscum contagiosum

Thread Starter
My 14 month old went to a 2.5 yr old boys house yesterday and played with his toys, shared food, typical toddler stuff. Then I see what I strongly suspect is molluscum c. on the boys abdomen. The parents say "Oh the dr told us its a viral rash and he will outgrow it." I asked "What virus?" and they didnt have a clue. This boy used to play wih a girl who had the same rash, back then I suspected m.c. as well. They are in an area with notoriously poor medical care so I doubt the parents would be well informed. It never even occured to them to take him to a dermatologist!

Anyways! (sorry Im just a bit steamed that they didnt think to inform me in advance that their kid had a contagious disease!!) Is my son at risk from having played near this kid? We will not be around them again (theyre see once in a blue moon friends) so Im not worried about future contact. They gave us an old hang in the door and bounce the baby toy (cant remember the name) that the boy had not played with in some time, is my son at risk of contracting m.c. from this toy?

thank you so much, im sort of freaking out right now...

I don't have any advice about the spread of germs, other than to say that it could be a wonderful opportunity to develop natural antibodies!

while it is contagious it doesn't spread unless you are exposed to the stuff inside the little pimple like bump...hopefully you will be fine. my dd2 had it for a year and a half on her tummy (pretty sure we got it from the pool)and the kids I babysit never caught it nor did dd1. While I was careful I never felt I had to tell everyone that came over about it, she already felt bad about it being on her.

I wouldn't worry. It's not smallpox or anything. Pretty benign.

It truely is going to be okay! I started a thread on this in the health and healing titled help with molluscum contagiosum and there are pages of info there but there is info there that everyone trying to find a cure so until you are more calm it would just probably really freak you out more. Three of my five kiddo's have had this and it does last sometimes 2 or more years but it isn't that terrible like another poster said it builds immunity! We have playmates over and I do not feel that I have to ALARM them. Their bodies are covered and there is such a small chance of coming into direct contact with an ozing pimple. Everything I am sure will be fine.
