Interesting about EMLA cream from my Dr

My DS saw the dr today because he somehow got a hair wrapped around some of the skin on his scrotum (about 2mm diameter). The Dr wasn't able to get the hair off because it's so tight, so he advised to leave it be and the skin would necrotize and fall off, like a skin tag would with dental floss. He said that if I really wanted to get it off, he said we could purchase some EMLA cream and apply it and leave it for FOUR hours and then try to pull the hair to break it (but we risk severing the skin off, which would cause bleeding).

The reason I am posting this, is because I find it totally appalling that my doctor would say to leave the cream on for four hours to numb something that isn't even causing my son any pain unless we pull the hair, yet baby boys have EMLA applied for 20min or so, and that's considered adequate to cut off their foreskin. Just makes me so sad.

Wow! Not great advice from your doctor. The effects of EMLA would have *worn off* after 4 hours. Not to mention that the skin would be all macerated from the liquid in the cream and would almost certainly tear.

I read the leaflet for EMLA and it says it can be applied for 1-5 hours under a dressing (my Dr suggested placing a bandaid over). But you bring up a good point on how the skin would be after being coated in cream for that long.

Fortunately, the hair broke about half-hour ago, and the area is now just really red and looks tons better

I realize you weren't asking for advice, but did you get the hair off? If not, maybe a depilatory cream would work.
