opinions on language learning?

Hi all,

I have a language learning question. I would benefit from learning Spanish for my job. We have a very large Spanish-speaking population in my area. It's not necessary, but would be very helpful. I work in health care. My kids have done some Spanish several different times but have never quite gone past the colors-numbers-how are you? stage.

Recently, they have wanted to start learning French, and have had an opportunity to begin learning some, and they want to do more. I always thought it would be great to learn a language together, try to talk in that language around the house, maybe even plan a vacation in the future! I took a lot of French in high school and college, and so that comes more naturally to me. So, do you think if we try learning French at home, and I try learning some Spanish for my job at the same time, am I defeating myself by trying to learn two languages at once? Or should I just try to convince my family to learn some Spanish with me for now and save French for later on in the year? Just looking for some perspectives from anyone who has language learning opinions or experience, either with your kids or on your own.

I am asking because I am considering purchasing a Rosetta Stone program, because they are having a sale right now before Christmas. I think my ten yr old would really like it (he has done the Spanish level 1 before and liked it), but I am trying to decide whether to buy French or more Spanish. Spanish is more practical for our area, but French sounds more fun and new to him right now, because he has been doing the beginner-level kid Spanish classes since he was very little. My 5 year old would probably go along with whatever!

Thanks!

Off the top of my mind, I'd go with the French, if only because they are enthusiastic and asking for it, and might change their mind a year from now. Spanish and French are both latin languages, so your child will have transferrable "skills" in learning to recognize that verbs need to be conjugated in a certain way, and some words will have similar etymology with their roots and origins. Heck, english has a lot of words that are derived from French!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Thanks! You're right, now while they are enthusiastic about it is the time to do it. There is always time to learn another language later.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't do French with them and Spanish for yourself at the same time. It might even help you to more firmly fix the differences in your mind.

I've studied more than one language at a time before, and the main problem with it for me was finding enough time to do both. I didn't have trouble separating the languages in my mind.

We had the same issue with dd#1 who is in ps middle school right now. We will be hsing in a year or so when she gets to hs, thus my hanging out here (and her little sister is partially hsing ). Dd#1 had the option of Spanish or French in 7th grade. Spanish is more useful here and she's taken a little Spanish in the past, but she was more interested in French. She's taking French. I agree with the others who said that something the child is interested in is a better choice.

As an aside, I've been spending time hunting down free games as a late and found this very cool language website that I wanted to pass on to you: http://www.livemocha.com/. It does have a subscription service where you pay for the language learning, but it also has quite a bit that you can get for free and French is one of the languages. We haven't paid for anything on their site personally so I can't vouch for the paid services, but the free ones are pretty cool.

Thanks all! And thanks for the resource! We are going to go with French at home for now, and I am going to do some private Spanish lessons with vocabulary specific to what I need to talk about on my job. Thanks!
