regarding anaesthetic

I've heard so many people say that their baby was only away from them for 5, 10 minutes for a circumcision. I know EMLA takes a while to take effect, but what about other methods of pain relief? Do they all take some time to work, in which case this would mean all these babies that were only away for 10 minutes effectively had no pain relief at all?

Local anaesthetic, which is used for penile blocks, takes 5-10 mins to take effect. Could they be exagerating to make it seem like less of a big deal?

Or the doc could not be waiting long enough for the anesthestic to take effect. Sometimes when they bring a baby back for a circ in the nursery where I work, I go out and walk around the hospital for a little while so I don't have to be around it. Often, when I get back in 10 minutes, the circ is done and the baby already back to the room. Of course, some circs take a lot longer than that, if the doc is not so experienced, or there are unexpected issues, like excessive bleeding or uneven cutting that needs "fixing."

Or the doc could just not be using anesthesia.

Al lot of cutting is still done with no anesthesia at all...sometimes they just stick a sugar coated paci in the baby's mouth and call it anesthesia.

True!

My hubby got a whack on the head recently and had to get some staples. He said the guy did it with the lidocaine needle in one hand and the stapler in the other, the whole thing taking seconds. If they'll do that to a 30 year old man who's certainly capable of noticing and complaining, is it likely they treat babies any better?
