She knows her letter sounds, whats next?

My youngest LOVES books and has since she was old enough to hold one. She's also been obsessed with letters for awhile now. Last night she was playing on starfall which she totally loves and it turns out she knows all her letter sounds which she was happy to demonstrate when I asked what letter something was. I have no plans on pressuring her, I learned to read easily and early as well as has most of my family. My earliest happy memories were hiding in my secret hiding place and reading story books, I must have been about 4 at the time. I present this as a fun game and if she's interested great, if not, we find something else. 90% of the time she's interested. So, whats next? Sound blending? Or time to move to very early readers like Bob books? I'm a bit lost, my older one HATED anything to do with reading and didn't really start learning until she was about 8 and that was with the help of headsprout which is not in the budget right now.

if your children are allowed to watch TV, i'd recommend the leapfrog talking word factory: http://www.amazon.com/LIONS-GATE-HOM...1591982&sr=8-1

in lieu of bob books, you could even just make your own...

cat

cat sat

cat sat on rat

the rat is fat

etc...

The next step for us was recognizing sounds in words. For instance, the "begins with" and "ends with" games became big hits. DD now initiates and answers her own games. "Mommy, what does 'computer' start with?... 'c'." Ends-with is still trickier for her, but she's a pro at begins-with.

So we're doing that, as well as recognizing the sounds inside of words, having her "spell" words to me with their sounds, and starting blending. The blending isn't really clicking yet, but she'll get there.

My younger one is blazing through www.progressivephonics.com

Free except for the ink and paper. We punch three holes in them and "bind" them with brass fasteners.

We call them Brad Books.

We like that we read them together.

If you're watching your budget, I second the ProgressivePhonics website! I just talked about us using this a few days ago, I just wish I was using it much earlier. The Alphabetti books are very cute, my dd loves them and wants to read them all the time. I love how they are a cooperative event. We've started reading the poems on the phonics books, which are very short but kinda cute poems, but we will miss the Alphabetti characters.
