Vitamin K question

This came up on my birth board, but I have a question with no answer. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I'm due in 2 weeks, so need an answer ASAP!

I don't want to give the Vit. K injection but prefer oral. There are no Kosher liquid, and the only thing I can get are the tablets from Solgar vitamins.

Can I take the Vit. K, and dilute it with water, to make it liquid and give to the baby?

Here's what the Solgar label writes:

Serving Size 1 tablet
Amount Per Serving % DV

Calcium (as dicalcium phosphate) 90 mg 9%

Vitamin K (as phytonadione) 100 mcg 125%

If yes, how much would I have to give for the baby?

Thanks so much, Ana

I would say write to Scientific Botanicals and ask if their product would meet Kosher standards. It may very well meet those standards- I would not know how to mess with tablets to end up with what is recommended for oral vitamin K-- one thing that has long been done is using the injectable vitamin K liquid and give it orally -

You need to ask your rabbi. Since it's a medicine, and it tastes pretty awful, it may not require kosher supervision, or be permissible since there is no kosher alternative.

Is it considered a medicine? I didn't think of it that way.

Thanks.

It's both a prophylactic and a treatment for hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (HDN) aka vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB)...and I've always considered it more medication than supplement, even though it is a vitamin, because it is so much more of that vitamin than you'd take on a daily basis for supplementation purposes.
