How to finish seams on stretch velvet?

I'm making DD and myself matching Christmas dresses out of stretch velvet. It doesn't seem to be fraying at all. Do I need to finish the seams, which I don't normally do on knits?

Assume we don't need to get 10 years out of these dresses since I'm pregnant and she'll out grow hers and we have no serger.

You can finish knit edges with a zigzag, or better, a 3-step zig zag. Sorry, I know that's too late for you, but maybe someone else without a serger will be searching for that answer.
