Weird diet for an 8 month old, but Baby led weaning.

My 8 month old loves feeding himself... but his choices are so completely different than what is mainstream "right". He loves feta cheese, mushy sun dried tomatoes, bits of bacon, brussel sprouts, broccoli... and spicy foods. He meets the development milestones for most of the foods, he sat steady unassisted at 5 months and uses pincer grasp to eat all these foods, is almost walking. The only digestive problems he has experienced were foods that MIL force fed him...
Why does it seem so wrong to let him eat what he wants to eat?

If he's not having digestive problems, I don't see a problem. My mom never bought baby food. She just mashed up whatever they were eating in the food mill. So my brother and I ate a lot of adult foods.

Because we've been told for the last 75 years that we need to give them mush made up by experts in a lab. Gag!

His diet sounds delicious.

sounds like my 9 month old. looooooves applewood bacon, pea soup, roasted chicken, spicy thai noodles, greek yogurt, buttery/creamy grits (cooled and cut into chunks), really any roasted veggie.

But he also loves any carb he can get his hands on-- bagel, croissant, brown rice crackers, toast, and those addictive Happy Baby green O's I'd rather he had not ever tasted!

My kids ate all kinds of things at that age that people accustomed to the typical bland baby diet were shocked by. DD2's first word was "pepper," meaning cayenne pepper, because she wanted it on EVERYTHING.

My DD ate a diverse diet at that age, too. Her favorites were black olives, blue cheese, and mushed up chickpeas.
