One thing we did to help our abused rescue dog love her crate was to feed her in it. Now at meal time she will run and sit in her crate and wait next to her food dish!
(We also started doing this because our two dogs will fight over each others food dishes, or eat as fast as they can so that the other dog doesn't come and steal it first.)
Our coonhound escaped his metal crate once too. He somehow flipped it over and bent the top open and got out! I had no clue that could happen. We got a plastic airline type crate for our second dog.
