Is this normal?

I am a first time mom to a 10 1/2 month old, who was born at 34 weeks. There are days when he shows signs of starting to talk says things kind of like "mum-mum" or "mum" or "baba". But then other days he wont say anything at all?

Also, there are times I call his name and he immediately responds and other times he totally ignores me? Is this the begining signs of him being a typical male? lol

Wow. The range of normal is so huge, he sounds fine to me. I remember everyone saying how their one year old was talking and saying all these words and my kid wasn't. At one and a half he finally really started saying one word statements, "ball" "vroom-vroom" for car, etc. He still seemed like a slow talker and then after his 2nd birthday, it all took off. Now, he's a great talker and can say anything and express any thought. But, he still ignores me sometimes when I call his name. At least until I go over and take away whatever he's focused on...

I think it's normal. My lo has rolled over a handful of times, but will go for weeks without doing it. I think he masters one trick and moves on to the next.

Does "days where he doesn't say anything at all" mean he's totally quiet? Or just no word-like sounds? My 10 month old doesn't say words either, but does make a lot of different noises.

ahhh..selective hearing. all of mine have had it.

The days he doesnt say anything at all, it sounds more like he is talking with his mouth closed
