New mattress shopping help

We will be buying a new mattress come this new yr, we have too. Ours is old and although it was well made mattress it has done its service plus we are upgrading in size from a Queen to King (we cosleep and hopefully we'll have another babe in bed with us soon)

Unfortunately buying an organic non flame retardant mattress just isnt in our budget. We live in CA and although there are actually TONS of places to shop from that have those they are very prohibitively out of the budget. Plus we need a new mattress now, saving would take another 10 yrs and we dont do credit unless its an emergency.

Does anyone have any info in terms of manuf. among "mainstream" manuf. (sealy, serta, etc) and what chemicals they use on their products. Im really concerned about the whole flame retardants issue and latex is out of the question. We have tried the air chamber beds but it too is too much. I wonder if there is one company that is a little more non toxic than another. I use lots of things on top of the mattress (featherbed, mattress protector, sheets) so there would be several layers and Im hoping to allow it to "off gas" a few weeks in the garage if possible. Im lost any help would be appreciated.

I don't know what your budget is, but this site offers latex mattresses at a cost often equivalent to standard mattresses... You can buy a 6 inch mattress and 3 inch mattress in king size for around $1000

Latex is out of the question due to skin allergies.

Whoops, I missed that sentence. Maybe try to see if anyone is selling a mattress from a house that has been staged? That way the mattress has already off gassed for a bit, plus it hasn't been used. A floor model of a mattress might be a good buy too!

We purchased a baby mattress from TheNaturalBedStore.com, where organic mattresses are made in Lincoln, Nebraska. We LOVE our mattress! Might check them out...

I would recommend White Lotus Home as an economical non-toxic mattress to look into. They have lots of options. If you can find a "doctor's prescription" for one of their plain cotton ones without flame retardants, those are the most affordable "natural" mattresses I have found. Sill not cheap, and not sure about comfort, but I know I'm willing to give up a little comfort to have better peace of mind. Also, have you thought of looking around for a used organic mattress/bed? I know maybe that's a long shot, but for example, we have a King size Natura that my dh doesn't really care for. Its not "perfect" but it IS quality natural materials and when we upgrade I'm thinking of selling it for $500... is that gross? we've always had a mattress protector that zips around the top layer of it, and I figure a family in your shoes might want it...
