Anyone have success w/DYI language instruction?

It's really important to me for my dds to learn Spanish but I'm struggling with the cost and quality of private lessons.

I grew up in Texas and know how Spanish should sound and can understand rudiments if the speaker is patient but I'd basically be learning at the same time as my kiddos. I'd be willing pay for quality private lessons but lessons from a native speaker aren't available in my small town. We tried with a non native speaker but after $250 dollars and 4 mo, they hadn't covered more than numbers and colors. I'm quite sure that I could managed that on my own.

Any suggestions?

check and see if any of your local libraries offers http://www.mangolanguages.com/ for free. My local library has this, only wishing they would have the language we need. But if your local library doesnt have it, maybe check a nearby library system that you could become a patron of and then get access to this program for free.

We're doing K-12 online Spanish- you can get it month by month and dd is learning to read Spanish, but not speak it so much. Another family I know uses Rosetta Stone in combination with a group Spanish class.

These might be options to try until you can find a native speaker. Good luck!

Have you thought of teaching your children yourself using The Complete Book of Spanish? It is a huge workbook, about $15, with all sorts of beginning Spanish vocabulary presented. It is meant for children from grades 1-3 (but the same publisher also has The Complete Book of Starter Spanish for younger children, too). If you got your children through the book, you would probably have given them a very good start.

We're doing Latin and it's going very well but I'm a Latin teacher by trade
