Did anyone watch this by any chance? We don't have cable TV at our house, but I saw it over Christmas. A group of men native to an island in the South Pacific called Tanna came to visit the US. It was pretty amazing to watch in many aspects, but I loved their comments on the food.
They visited a cattle ranch. The rancher kept about 5,000 cattle and fed them dry hay and grains mostly. The men from Tanna told the rancher that what he fed them would make them sick that they needed fresh green grass. When they were giving them antibiotics and medicine to make them carry their babies, the men said that that completely freaked them out. They said they would fear that by eating that meat that that would in turn cause their bodies to be negatively affected.
Next, they visited a family in the midwest for Thanksgiving Dinner. The woman was making food and had some canned yams. They have yams on Tanna and didn't recognize the canned ones. Then, they tasted them and realized what they were. When they were talking amongst each other they said... Does she not realize that this is dead food? There is no life there. She put the turkey in a plastic basting bag to cook, and they worried about eating it after that too.
When they got back to Tanna they had gained weight and commented that we were a fat people.
It was amazing to see traditional foodways being common knowledge amongst a people. I mean, they had never seen turkey bags or canned food. They spoke about how their animals forage for their food and they grow their crops etc... They do cook on open fires and eat well. Just good food. Anyway, I was really interested in their comments on food amongst other things.
