where to start with toddler?

Thread Starter
dd is 16 months and i would love to find some activities lists or webs that gave me like a daily idea. i try and be creative but it would be helpful to have imput, like maybe a daily mail or something. Im really looking for cheap, educational, sensory idea- we do the basics like draw, read, bake, but i need more.

is there a daily email to get ideas to do at home?

Do you have any ideas what to do with a 16+ month old that are really fun and educational?

also- is there a curic. you can get for this age group?

she is mostly nonverbal but knows animals/body parts and some items in 2 languages. i would love ideas on how to teach her other stuff but feel like my creative juices are......frozen.

I found a ton of great books with ideas at the library. Gymboree has a nice one, and there's Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready which is kind of hit or miss with that age IMO.

16 months is a good time to start fingerpainting!

You could also introduce oobleck (cornstarch and water mixture).

If you have museums in your area, you can wear the kiddo and talk about what you see.

Water play or sand play is also really good at this age. If you get a shallow dish washing tub, and fill it will sand, add some spoons, cups, and small bowls, you've got a fun activity.

Also playing in bubbles, you can do this in a basin too or turn the bathtub into a sensory play area.

Blowing bubbles too.

Add letters and numbers, sea/water animals to the bathwater.

"Painting" with food (pudding, mashed yams, avocado, peanut butter).

"Painting" with shaving cream.

"Washing" dishes and babies (another use for that basin).

Collage on self-adhesive paper (you can buy die-cut shapes at discountschoolsupply.com).

Dress-up.

Its likely you could borrow Signing Times videos from the library.

For curriculum books for toddlers, look at discountschoolsupply.com, there are books out there, but I find they are often to adult directed and "crafty." Following directions is good to know, but rigid right and wrongs aren't so good at this age.

You can also introduce an easel for painting at this age.

If you got an Ipod touch or Iphone, the touch screens are great for little fingers, especially the Jackson Pollock Ap, and drag the letter to spell words games.

Can't forget playdough! Try different recipes, I really like cloud dough. Or adding essential oils, glitter, herbs, spices, etc.

Roll out sugar cookie dough and use cookie cutters. It makes an awesome playdough!

Take walks to playgrounds.

Scout out the nearest stores with train tables.

Find local storytimes (libraries, book stores, toy stores).

I don't know about any daily activity ideas, but I think its a good idea. I'd like it!

I'd be happy to get one started and share ideas with a group of mamas, we could do it in a blog format or daily email.

At that age it's great to have a weekly schedule and they do learn a great deal from doing the same thing over and over again, e.g., paint on Monday, walk in woods on Tuesday, swim at indoor pool Wed/Fri, gymnastics class Thurs.
