she actually fell asleep before 10 pm...fluke? or the magic of NPR?

Just had to share that my DD actually fell asleep at 9:30 tonight. After napping at her usual time, 1 to 3. Usually if she naps at all, then she won't go to bed before 11 pm. It doesn't matter what we do--I've tried EVERYTHING. Bedtime routine, lights out from 5:30 on, starting bedtime at different times, rocking, nursing, laying her down and leaving her be, lots of outside time and exercise during the day. Nothing has ever worked. From the day she was born, she has almost never gone to bed for the night before 11 pm, unless she didn't nap at all. There were a few days of fluke early bedtimes, but nothing we could ever replicate.

Anyway, today we were traveling back from Christmas travels, and I was listening to NPR's show Car Talk during the drive. When we got home, I just wanted to go to bed, so we had dinner and then I went ahead and did our bedtime routine and lay down with DD, even though it was only 9 pm. Mind you, I've done this at every time between 5 pm and 10:30 pm before, and it's never gotten DD to sleep earlier than 11. But I figured we could just lie there and nurse and relax for a few hours, and if she wanted to get up she could look at books or something. The only thing that I did differently from our usual bedtime routine was that I started playing the Car Talk show on my iPhone. And...DD fell asleep. In about 20 minutes. She NEVER falls asleep that quickly--well, except if I start at 10:30. The ONLY times she's ever fallen asleep earlier than 11, it took at least an hour, usually closer to two hours, for her to settle and fall asleep.

Could Car Talk be the magic answer? No way. Way too easy. One thing for sure, though--we'll be listening again tomorrow night.

LOL! I'm going on the website now to download all the old episodes...

I never would have suspected Car Talk...maybe This American Life, but not Car Talk.
