marginal cord insertion - Q

Anyone have/had this? Anything to really worry about?

The Dr told me its no big deal & that in her 25yrs she only saw 1 woman who had a prob with it.

Also, at 20wk US approx baby wt was 13oz & at 24wk US approx wt was 1lb 8oz. So they said it is growing nicely.

I have another US scheduled for 32wks to check growth.

I am afraid to google it bec the Dr warned me I will read many terrible things about it. What is your experience?

I'm one of the stories you don't want to read about. With my second son his marginal insertion and possible vasa previa (where the blood vessels cross over the cervical opening and tear when the amniotic sac breaks) was not diagnosed. During the last 30 minutes or so of his delivery the vessels tore and he lost the majority of his blood before we could get him delivered. He died 12 hours later. He was beautiful and perfect, 9lbs 14oz and 22 inches.

I would ask for a second opinion from a perinatologist who has experience with marginal insertions and/or vasa previa. If I had known then what I know now...

From what I understand most of it depends on where the placenta is in relation to where the baby is. If the placenta is high in the uterus there may not be problems. I had marginal previa until 37 weeks so my placenta was very low.

You'll hear from lots of women on here who have delivered with no problems and had a marginal insertion - didn't even know it until after the placenta was delivered. But, I would consider it a gift to know ahead of time and ask for more monitoring just to make sure everything is safe. This is your baby, not the doc's. She may have only seen a problem with it once but, from first hand experience, I'd give just about anything not to be the one. You have every right to ask for more care with this diagnosis.

Best wishes.
