PUL problems

Anyone else encounter problems with PUL covers?

I finally came to the conclusion that PUL was causing the constant diaper rash for DS. When he slept in wool the rash would abate or disappear, even though he was in a wet diaper.

I switched to sposies and he has not had a single rash in 5 months. I could not afford a wool system, plus I was really sick of the laundry. I was doing them every other day, with 3 wash cycles (cold rinse, cold with soap, hot rinse) - going insane because I felt like horrible mother for all the diaper rashes DS was suffering. I thought my diapers were not clean.

I use those training pants sometimes at home and he never gets a rash - but we're also pulling them off within 10 seconds of getting wet!

Constant rashes can often be caused by bacteria in the diapers. Try using 1-2 tablespoons chlorine bleach every 2 weeks. This is my regular wash routine:

cold prewash with 1 cup white vinegar
hot wash with detergent and every 2 weeks, 1 tablespoon bleach
cold rinse
hot wash with nothing (We have a softener so I have to be careful to rinse thoroughly.)
cold rinse

If the rash is red and bumpy and sandpaper-y and peels, it is likely yeast and can be cleared up with some Lotrimin cream.

I only have 1 nighttime wool cover and just hang it up to air out in the morning, and it is ready to go at night. I would bet that if you bleached the diapers, you would be able to use the PUL covers during the day, no problem.

I don't use much PUL because it doesn't breathe and I think it is more likely to contribute to rash. I bought a lot of my wool off Etsy.com for $10 each on average. I agree w/Galatea too.

My same diapers used with the wool did not cause rashes. I have read multiple places never to use bleach, so I boiled them instead. Once the PUL goes on, the rash begins. I have had zero rashes with disposables.
