Corn dogs...gross, I know...bear with me...

So, my boyfriend loves corn dogs. I don't becaue they're expensive and unhealthy. Is there a cheap way to make these better? I recently bought 100% turkey hot dogs, and he liked those. I imagine they're better than whatever it is in normal hot dogs...the corn dogs he likes say it is a mix of meats. Is it just a matter of making some sort of batter for them? Are they baked or fried? The ones he picks out are pre-made and frozen, so I have no idea how a person would start to make them from scratch. I've so far been successful at showing him that it is possible to make healthier versions of the not-so-healthy things he likes, but I don't know about this one...

I'd probably get a nitrate-free, 100% beef hotdog. (I'm vegan, btw.) The batter would be a regular cornbread batter in which you would dip the dog and deep-fry it. Cornbread batter would be very inexpensive to make (or even buy boxed) since it's just flour, cornmeal, sugar, and some egg/milk combination and maybe baking powder. The all-beef hotdogs would be rather pricey, though.

I heard a great idea for kids, but may work for him as well, haha.

I'm a vegan so I'm going to tell you what I would do. You may alter as you wish. So, get some awesome healthy veggie dawgs and cut them into large chunks. Then make some homemade corn bread muffins, and drop a chunk in each muffin before you bake the batter. Voila! Healthy corn-dawg muffins!

Ohhhh! I like that idea! I have tossed around the idea of making some vegan corndogs before, but it would be some work with the frying and all that. I may have to try your suggestion!

I actually make these and my boys LOVE them, including my "big kid" (aka DH). We buy 100% organic beef kosher franks and I cut them into fourths. I mix up some cornmeal batter (I add a little honey to sweeten it a bit) pour some into one of those larger muffin tins and then place a piece into each and bake. I dont like to eat fried foods but I assume you could use popsicle sticks stuck into the frank, dip in batter, and fry it up as well.

OMG, muffins...perfect idea, I didn't think of that! And yes, I tried to sell him on the veggie dogs (I was veg for four years and vegan for six and I like the veggie dogs) and it is not happening at all.

I'll add some honey to the mix too, I recall that the box of frozen corn dogs says they have honey batter.
