Anything actually work to reduce nausea?

Hi,
This is my 4th and last pregnancy. For the first two I had 24 hr/day nausea to about 14 weeks. The third was to 26 weeks. I'm 6 weeks now and have been miserable for about 10 days. I'm desperately seeking relief. I never vomit (although I would welcome it to get temporary relief). Ginger and accupressure haven't helped in the past. Nor has eating small meals, eating before rising, all the standard advice.

A friend told me nausea is a sign of vitamin deficiency. So as of 2 days ago I'm taking a prenatal, vitamin D (5000), vit. B6 50mg every 4 hours, and magnesium. I'll start taking vitamin C as I saw it helps with B6 absorption. I figure I need to stay on this for at least 2 weeks to see results if their might be any. Am I kidding myself that this might work?

Someone else suggested completely eliminating sugar and white flour. Has that worked for anyone?

Would love to know what has worked for others.

The only (non-prescription) thing that worked for me was Unisom. It, in combination with B6, is a prescription medication for pregnancy nausea in Canada. You can find tons of information about dosages and ramping on/off online -- I ended up taking 1/2 a pill 3x a day for nearly 3 months.

For break-through, I turned to Zofran.

Sorry your sick, m/s is really the pits. The only thing that even kind of helped me this time was raw apple cider vinegar. I think you are to take 1 TBS mixed in water first thing in the morning before you eat anything else....I will not say it cures the m/s by any means, but I did notice a definite difference in how much I gagged/vomited and how much smells/sights etc bothered me; I guess I felt a little less nauseus. I can say that on the days I'd forget it didn't take me long to realize it. That said, my m/s still lasted for 10 solid weeks, despite the RACV and oh I wore sea bands 24/7 which also helped a little too. I couldn't take any vitamins, they'd make vomit, so I don't have any advice on that. I hope these weeks fly by for you and the m/s ends soon!
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I feel your pain Mama. I was nauseated for 28 weeks with DD until a patient of mine recommended lemons. Up till that point I'd tried everything. I took one lick of a lemon & the nausea was gone. Granted I had to do this daily but it was so worth it. Good Luck!

Nothing really worked for me. Ondansetron allowed me to function for awhile but stopped working after a few weeks.

Lemon juice in water helped with the hypersalivation and the horrid taste in my mouth.

I tried eating before I got up, eating when I woke up in the night, B6, acupuncture, acupressure (sea bands), ginger, a homeopathic travel sickness spray and maxalon. None of those things worked.

There is a lot of good info here:

I have followed this regiment for months and feel good (cautiously) so far. I'm only 4 weeks but last time I felt sick before I even got my BFP and was on a IV by week 8.

my 4th preg. as well and I have found the most helpful is to eliminate all refined sugar - and I have a sweet tooth - and extra sleep. 3rd pregnancy morning sickness would wake me in the middle of the night and I'd be throwing up for hours and occasionally just sleep/rest laying against the tub. Though it was hard not eating sugar it has made the biggest difference this time. I've still occasionally thrown up but nothing like my previous pregnancies. Also sleep seems to be a trigger as I've noticed I'm more queasy on days with less sleep. My sis mentioned this one to me and it has made a difference.

Other things too like protein and lemons help but the sugar and sleep seem to have made the best improvement and weren't something I connected before. Hope it ends soon for you!

Lemons worked really well for me with ds....this time around I have had nausea/vomiting the entire pregnancy although the vomiting finally stopped around 5 months, but I ended up taking prescription meds for a few days just so I could put something back in my stomach.

If you can handle it, sipping warm chamomile tea with lots of honey was really helpful. Ginger ale worked for me, but not anything else ginger, oddly enough.

Vitamins make me sick during pregnancy but I can usually keep them down if I take calcium right after eating, and then wait an hour or so, take the multi, and then go right to sleep. I have no idea if this is a mental thing or what, but it has worked for me with both pregnancies.

sorry you're not feeling good! It's miserable I know....hope it goes away soon!

The only things that worked for me were conventional nausea treatments -- in my first pregnancy, diclectin (unisom OTC sleep aid + B6) worked very well, and in my second pregnancy I caved and got an Rx for Zofran. I wish some of the crunchier stuff had worked for me but they didn't .

nausea

I'm probably about 8 weeks and have been feeling sick for over three weeks now. Today I was doing so-so this morning after eating pancakes and real maple syrup. Then I made a (I know not so healthy but when you feel horrible you just want to throw something fast in the oven) pizza and after just a couple bites realized it was going to make me feel sick. So, being hungry and getting sick from not eating - I ate a carrot. I felt better for awhile - better than I've felt for some time. I followed that with some celery with peanut butter (small amount). I also drank a very small glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Then I got hungry and my hubby brought me a fatty burger. It helped at first but now, a couple hours later I'm not feeling so hot. I think my nausea gets worse at night anyways - could be because I'm more tired?

So the talk of getting rid of large/fatty meals, white breads and sugars, and adding foods and/or vitamins rich in B vitamins, vitamin C and other good stuff - makes sense to me right now.

a Mothering magazine article about the use of medical marijuana for extreme pregnancy nausea (hyperemesis gravidarum)...

article is entitled "Medical Marijuana: A Surprising Solution to Severe Morning Sickness"

I'm glad you posted that link lillypop. There is no evidence that smoking cannabis is harmful to the fetus. Cannabis has been used as an aid for nausea for thousands of years. I've heard of many midwives who say that it is fine. There is a major stigma around it so I can understand why people are not comfortable talking about it, let alone using it to help their nausea. I have met many moms who used cannabis daily during pregnancy and who gave birth to healthy babes.

i have been blessed to never get morning sickness (knocking on wood bc im 7 weeks n it could still hit me) but, i had a friend that stayed sick untill about 5 months. the doctor told her to smoke weed. i told her she needed to change doctors!!! but.....it did work. she smoke about half of a marjuana cigarette in the mornings and it relieved her sickness. i dont recommend it but it might work.

Unisom and B6 at night helped me a ton. My prenatal made the morning sickness worse, but taking it at night helped a little. I also got the sea bands (wrist bands for sea sickness) and they helped some.

Good luck! Definitely give the Unisom and B6 combo a try.

just wanted to say that this is the only thing that helps me to function. i also used this method with dd when i had hg until about 24 or so wks.

nothing else worked. and, imo, medical marijuana is safer than prescription drugs that destroy the organs to relieve ms. many of those drugs are not very safe, and are only prescribed in very severe cases.

taking it orally does not work, in most cases. if you have access to a vaporizer, it's MUCH better healthwise.

Do you mean you should put it in the oil compartment of the vaporizer?

not a humidifer. a vaporizer is a special piece of equipment that heats the herb at a very low temp, only releasing the cannabinoids. what most people experience as a "high" is actually the effects of inhaling burnt plant material, not the effects of the cannabinoids themselves.

B6 shots.

I went to a naturopath, and have been getting weekly shots of vitamin B6. It has definitely helped. The nausea is not gone...but it's way, way, way more manageable than it was.
