Supportive care for dog with Cancer

I have a 12 year old Great Pyrenees that I love. She has been diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma along with a bacterial bladder infection.

The vet has put her on a 30 day course of amoxicillin and a continuous low-dose of baytrill. She is also taking the NSAID Piroxicam. Currently she receives Blue Buffalo Senior food.

Do you have any suggestions for supportive care, ways to lessen the frequency and severity of the infections and ways to boost her immune system? Will adding cranberry supplements or Vit C help by making her urine more acidic? Is there anything probiotic I can give her? When I asked the vet these things, he wasn't much help.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.

I'm so sorry your dog is sick. I have no advice..I did see canine probiotics yesterday at Petsmart so they do exist.

Are you anywhere near a vet school? Ours has a good holistic care program as well as cancer center.

there is a yahoo group that is really good for dogs with cancer, i think it's canine_cancer but i've unsubscribed as my dog died two years ago.

i'd also try a cancer center.

there's lots of supplements you can try but i don't think any of them really did any good for us. there's an essiac herbal supplement that is supposed to be good. you can look at http://www.b-naturals.com/ for the supplements. i think i still have some essiac blend, my dog hated it and i really wasn't into trying to force her to take it.
