Ok, My 2yr old DS has been sick since last monday 12/21. He started throwing up and running a fever first then it was followed by diarrhea. I took him to his doc on wednesday and she said it was just a virus-- she never really even checked him. Well it got worse, He has not ate hardley anything at all but he has been drinking plenty tho it seems to go straight thru him. ON Christmas I took him to the ER because he was still vomiting. They have him Zofran and since then he hasn't thrown up but still had diarrhea. The doc in the ER was grumpy I guess from working on Christmas and didn't test anything-- never even touched him. He had been sick for 5days at tht time and was very grumpy and did not want to be bother and the nurse there had the nerve to ask me if he was always a "difficult" child. Well anyway, then on Sunday he woke up screaming and bending over in pain. I took him back to the ER and they did a urine sample, blood work, U/S on his appendix, and a CT Scan. It all came back good. They told me they don't know what it is but that it should go away on its own. Has anyone had this happen. I can't stand to see him in so much pain. They have him tylenol w/ codine in the ER and tht helped but they told me to just give him Motrine at home. IT only helps a tiny bit. What can I do????

I don't know, mama... but I wanted to send you a hug... I really hope your LO gets feeling better very soon. And I hope you find someone who can treat you with a little more compassion.

At a year old my little boy had a virus like you are describing and what we learned about it that it would have to run its course and the only thing we could do was monitor him to make sure he wasn't getting dehydrated. I wonder if the pain your little boy has been feeling is associated with that. One of the best things to prevent dehydration in young ones is to breastfeed as a replacement for nourishment while he gets better. Is he still nursing?

Other than that, it sounds like you encountered some really insensitive and perhaps negligent healthcare that probably hasn't done anything to help you feel more secure in taking care of your son. You can write a complaint to the hospital with the ER.

I feel your frustration with being sick. My husband came down with strep throat on 12/20 and then passed it to me 12/25. It sucks to be sick, especially around the holidays, and its miserable to watch your child feeling miserable.

Are you still nursing by chance? That's great for stomach/intestinal bugs.

DD had a virus a year ago where she was throwing up for 10 days and had diarrhea for longer.

Two pediatricians assured us that this was very normal for some kids. They just have sensitive stomachs and take a while to get over these types of viruses.

We also found out that as long as a LO has the diarrhea that came with the virus, they are contagious. Very.

I hope you get some answers but I wanted to reassure you that continual vomiting and runs can be totally attributed to certain (entero?)viruses. And you're not alone.

of course, if he starts to get dehydrated, I would bring him to an er and insist they look at him closer. If the stomach pains persist, get a referrel to a ped GI doc. I hope this is "only" a virus and will pass, but it's been a week, I would think you should start seeing some improvements very soon. Make it a point to look at his stool, if you see blood, insist on a referrel to GI. They tell you to give him Motrin, that ODD!!!! He's having GI pain, why not levsin, or something to help his tummy. Bad medical care You did all the right things, I'm sorry "They" didn't. If he's not better soon, I'd bring him right back in, or of course, if symptoms get worse. HUGS!
