I'm interested in buying an ebook reader, but there are a few things I'm wondering about. I would most likely get an ebookwise reader. It says it reads .txt, .rtf, .doc, HTML, and .rb.

So, if I want to read a book from, say, gutenberg, what's the process for getting it on the reader? Is it drop & drag, like an mp3 player? They talk about using software to transfer books on to the reader -- is that just to convert a format that the reader can't read into something it can, or is it for all files I want to put on?

For purchasing ebooks, can I go to Amazon and buy ebooks even if I don't have a Kindle? Is there a difference between buying an ebook to read on your computer vs. on a reader?

I'm just a little bewildered by the process and I'm not grasping what anything I'm reading about putting stuff on the devices to read really means. My experience is limited to moving pics from camera to computer and music from computer to mp3 player.

Also, I'm wondering about note taking. Is it just like writing in the margins? Or do you use the keyboard? If I made, say, a calendar in a .doc file, could I use it as a calendar on the reader, and write in it, or do you not actually write on the document?

I need an Idiot's Guide for ebook readers.
