Mattress question

I'm looking for advice...we're transitioning our DDs into a bunk bed in the room that they share. My DH and dad are building the bunk bed and we've taken steps to use only "green" wood stains, sealers, and adhesives in the bed construction. Now, I want to make sure that the mattresses that they'll be sleeping on are healthy as well. I'd like to avoid flame retardant chemicals and whatever else is evil and lurking within a mattress, but I must admit that I've never bought a mattress before (all of ours are inherited) and I'm at a loss for what to look for, what to avoid, etc.

I need to be somewhat mindful of cost, although I hope for the girls to use these for a good long time, so I would emphasize value (quality, comfort, and longevity) over straight sticker price per se. We will be buying 2 twin mattresses. On a bunk bed, they wouldn't have a box spring, but in future years they might be used on a regular twin bed with a box spring. I would also prefer to avoid latex as my sister has a life-threatening latex allergy and with it being an acquired allergy, I'd just as soon not have my girls sleeping on latex every night.

So, wise mamas who know far more than I....can you recommend specific brands/products? Things to look for/avoid? Types of products to consider? Anything else?

Thanks!

Check out Organic Grace. It's an MDC mama, and she has articles on the safety of mattresses and what to look for - they also sell safe ones.

I bought futon mattresses for my children. They are more firm but really cozy with the wool wraps they have!

This is what I was thinking. For bunk beds I would get two bunkee boards (bunky?) and then just lay the futon mattresses ontop of them. My kids LOVE sleeping on futon mattresses, and they have regular ones as well, but the futons are apparently super comfy.

Is there a specific type/brand of futon mattress that people would recommend? I think I read that they have to be foam-free to avoid flame retardants, correct?
