Any thoughts Help!

my dd is three weeks old. At night she nurses perfectly, she wakes up every three hours, my boobs are super full at this point and she has no problems eating. But, usually in the morning and evening we go through this routine where she acts hungry then when I put her on she screams bloody murder and pulls off, arches her back, tries to latch again, over and over and we go through this for an hour then she falls asleep. I don't know if there is too much milk, or not enough. It does sound like she is gasping a bit when she is sucking. I've tried putting her higher up on my breast, laying down on my side and feeding her it doesn't help. I've tried gas drops, a pacifier. She has a few good feeds through the day, but I'm worried about her getting enough. She has enough wet diapers a day, and many poops throughout the day and they are yellow. She doesn't spit up or vomit either. It's so frustrating not knowing whats wrong. I know I need to go see the lactation consultant, I just thought I would try here first.

sounds like you have super letdown it squirts so fast/har into her outh she can't keep up.
What I do/did is latch babe on till he pulls of then express by hand (I have to say this was usually not neccesary I'd be squirting milk all over the place) into a towel and latch back on repeat as/when needed.
It does sound like your dd is doing really well so don't forget to relax and enjoy!

concur with previous poster. I don't think you need a Lactation consultant at this point. Another way to deal with overactive letdown is to only nurse on one side per feeding. Some moms even stay on one side for a few feedings before switching. This kind of evens out the milk supply so it's not squirting out so much. I suspect that the night feeds are easier because supply is typically lower at night.

Also, sometime, quite honestly, you never figure out why this sort of behaviour is occuring and eventually it just stops regardless of what you do. As long as the diaper output is good, I wouldn't worry too much.

I have this problem, too, but I don't have oversupply. I try leaning back, and it doesn't help much. Seems like he hardly needs to suck to get milk and he has plenty of pees and poops. I understand how you feel, but I have just come to accept it and hope that he learns to handle it as he gets older. I know it is frustrating, just hang in there.

i'd be very careful with block feeds. sounds more like overactive letdown. maybe you can get her to activate the letdown and then unlatch her and squirt into a towel and then try to hook her back up? i did block feeds for os and ended up having to do herbs when we went 2 days with 3 of the feeds from bottles after i had surgery.

good luck!

My DS went through the EXACT same thing starting around 3 weeks old and he had really bad silent reflux. The only thing that finally stopped the screaming was Prevacid (took 2 weeks to work as well).

This is exactly how silent reflux started with my little ones too. I had two reflux babies. Reflux babies will often only eat when they are half asleep or very groggy because they are less aware of their discomfort. In fact some reflux babies are exclusively "sleep fed" which is a bad habit for them to develop. Here's a website where you can read about infant reflux to see if your baby may have some of the other signs and symptoms.
