There's a thread in the Jan due date club talking about waterproofing mattresses and carseats in case of water breaking. It's not something I really do, belong maybe keeping a towel in the car. With #1 my water didn't break until I was ready to push, so I wasn't really worried too much about soaking anything. But maybe I should be prepared...is this the sort of thing that tends to be consistent from birth to birth?

So, the question is:
For those of you more experienced moms, did your water break at roughly the same point in every labor/delivery?

Ugh, I just realized this would probably be better asked in Birth and Beyond!

3 births and my water broke during pushing or seconds before every time.

First time, my water broke and contractions started five minutes later. The other two times, it broke right before pushing.

The first two the water broke and couple min later contractions started, with number three the water didnt brake until i started pushing.

With both DD1 and DD2, my water broke as they crowned. I had AROM with DS, so no info there.

Labor 1 was SROM well before the onset of labor at 39+ weeks.

Labor 2 it did not break until I was 8 CM.

With my first, my water broke before labor started. It didn't come out in a gush though. I was able to make to the birth center to see my mw with just a pad and didn't ruin the car

With my second, my water broke well into labor.

I have had it break before labor began, while in labor, and not until seconds before birth.

My water broke in bed both times. I was the first sign of labour both times as well.

With my first I was asleep and woke up because I was too hot and threw off the covers and as I did I heard the double pop and felt the gush of water. DS was born 2.5 hours later.

With my second I was in bed awake doing a sudoku puzzle and I heard the double pop but no gush as his head was too low already and he was born 25 minutes later.

This is #4 for me, so this one could be different, BUT...

The first time my water broke when I was getting up for one of many nightly peeing trips & gushed everywhere...contractions started 2 hours later.

The second time my water broke as I as getting into bed for the night & gushed everywhere...contractions started 2 hours later.

The third time my water broke while I was walking around the house & gushed everywhere...contractions started about 28 hours later.

I'm atypical (from what I've gathered), though, in that my water gushes until the baby is well on its way down the birth canal...I mean, I feel like I'm literally peeing my pants for hours on end & soak through *towels* not pads. So I'm not sure my experiences will be too useful for your due date club! LOL! I will say that I'm glad that even the first pregnancy I made sure my bed had a plastic layer to waterproof it! And it's the first thing I do when I'm nearing full term each time!

My water broke prior to contractions with my first. It broke somewhere between 5-8 cm with my second child and it broke during pushing with my third.

With my first:
Water broke early in the morning while on the potty going pee. A funny pop, and a bit of a gush. Used a folded cloth diaper as a pad on the way to the hospital. Contractions started two hours later.

With my second:
Bag didn't break until baby's head came crashing through. That resulted in a big woosh that splashed all over the bed (homebirth). Tossed the sheets in the wash afterwards, no worse for the wear.

I personally wouldn't waterproof anything. Never really thought about water proofing the car seat the first time around...but the cloth diaper did the trick.

I voted 'started when I began to push each time', though with DD it broke at the beginning of pushing, and with DS it broke as he was crowning.

Judging from the poll results so far, it seems like there is no correlation between pregnancies. I better start sitting on a towel and carrying an extra change of clothes in the car.

Total opposites in my situation.

With my first, I was dilated 2-3 cm and effaced 75-80% for about 2 weeks before I went into labor. My water broke in bed with him (just a small trickle, and then when I stood up a big gush). That was my first real sign of labor. Contractions were pretty much immediately 5 min apart. He was born 6 hours and 20 mins later.

With my 2nd, I wasn't sure I was in active labor for a long time. I was only in labor for about 3 hours, and a good portion of that I wasn't even sure I was in labor. Showed up to the freestanding birth center 10 cm with no clue. Never felt obvious feelings of transition, etc. like I did with DS. Spend most of my labor waiting to feel pushy...I just didn't at 10 cm. I guess maybe because my membranes were still intact? My water broke with my DD as I was pushing. So the total opposite.

I slept with a shower curtain to protect my mattress (under the sheets) and had a 2nd one in the car. I had a 40 minute drive to the hospital for my first birth and it was just gushing out with every single contraction. I put a pad on before leaving for the hospital but that was a JOKE LOL. I arrived with very wet pants DH gets low blood sugar and hadn't eaten yet that morning, so on the drive to the hospital I had him stop to get something at a drive through so he wouldn't get all shaky, etc. I can only imagine what they were thinking as I sat w/ headphones on (listening to hypnobirthing) on a shower curtain in the front seat, contracting away LOL.

1st was AROM at 8 cm.

2nd was born in the caul.

3rd water EXPLODED seconds before she came flying out of me.

4th was the only time my water broke earlier (a few hours into early labour, 4ish hours before she was born).

With #1 I was super paranoid that I was going to have my membranes rupture when I was in my Moms brand new car (she got it in June, I was due at the beginning of August ). As it was they broke during labour 12 hours before he was born (total labour was 47 hours).

With #2 my membranes ruptured when I was using the washroom one last time before going to the library one day. He was born two and a half days later (though only 18 hours after contractions started.

Didn't count dd1 as I had AROM with her.....But dd2 and ds my water broke after the first couple pushes both times.

Both times I had SROM and then contractions started hours later. We'll see what happens this time around.
