What worked best for me was to put frozen fruit on the bottom of a dish, drizzle with honey and top with the yogurt before packing it in a lunch. By lunchtime it was like fruit on the bottom, and the juice and honey had mingled enough to stir nicely through the yogurt.
But you can also use a runny jam in your yogurt. Or a simple syrup (2 c sugar: 1 c water) can be used to sweeten it. Unless you're going to be letting it sit for a while (like packing it in a lunch), I wouldn't use sugar just because it won't dissolve easily.
It takes some experimentation, and depending on the age of your DD I'd give her some time to try it repeatedly to get used to it. With your DH, he's old enough to try different things on his own to figure out how he likes it. When I started making yogurt it was for financial reasons, so my DH didn't have a choice but to eat it.
Oh, and I don't flavor or sweeten prior to incubation because there are certain things I use yogurt for that can't be sweetened, and I refuse to keep 2 things of yogurt in the fridge.
And altering the length of incubation can also affect taste. We like it tangier, so we go for 24 hours, but you might want to do less.
