my 4 yr old woke up with croup i pumped and gave her 2 oz milk with about 2 oz cow milk. i have 2 questions.

1. will mixing the milk with other stuff alter the immune properties of the breast milk?

2. will pumping for my 4 yr old deprive the 3 mo old of milk? i had enormous over supply until earlier this month when i had surgery and then had to start fenugreek and blessed thistle to keep up with 3 mo old. i'm doing great now, but want to make sure i won't be dipping into 3 mo's food to give 4 yr old an immuno boost.

Awww - hope she's feeling better soon!

Your supply should adjust to the extra pumping quite quickly - be sure to stay well hydrated and nourished yourself!

I have always heard to keep breastmilk separate - that is not to mix with cow's milk or other milk substitute. I can't tell you if there is any evidence behind that though - sorry.

thank you pg! she wouldn't drink it alone because she's just not used to the taste. i figure as long as i don't cook it or shake it vigorously, it's better than nothing.

as an aside, dd is running around like nothing's wrong lol

Exactly! Breastmilk mixed has got to be better than no breastmilk at all! Plus, as I said, I don't know if there is any evidence for the 'don't mix' rule I was taught.

Glad to here she is doing OK!

I thought the no no for mixing BM and cows milk was that you wanted to make sure the child gets all the BM and if they don't finish the cup of liquid, they at least got all the BM first, then the rest later, not that mixing the two actually does anything to the quality of the BM.
