bum genius vs. fuzzibunz celebrity death match

Who would win and why? j/k about the death-match tho.

I'm pg with my 2nd, new to cd-ing. I did sposies and part-time EC (I didn't even know we were EC-ing, lol) w/ my first, and she potty-learned pretty early.

This time I definitely want to CD, but honestly, I'm intimidated by the pre-folds, lol. I'm thinking that buying a big batch of one-size fitteds/AIO would be best for me and dp---who has never diapered, and I don't see him doing the pre-fold/pin thing.

Comparing the prices of sposies, diaper services, and the one-sized, even tho the OS are expensive up-front, it's still way less $ than a diaper services, and they'd last til 35#s (supposedly). Do they really go from nb to tot? Almost seems too good to be true.

So if you were going to rely primarily on OS, what wisdom would you give a newb? Should I get some pre-folds and covers anyways? How many OS/AIO will we need altogether--like will the pack of 20 BGs cut it? Or would we actually need to buy two of the 20 packs? Eek! That's a lot of money. Or the 20 pk BGs and the 12 pk FBs? I am looking on the cotton babies site.

The FBs and the BGs look very similar, can someone give me a comparison?

Talk to me, mommas.

Yeah, see I don't want to keep buying sets as the babe gets older. My dp will definitely balk at the cost (even tho sposies would cost more). So that's why I'm leaning toward a big up-front investment for the one-size. But can it really be? Can they really go from nb to tot? It just seems incredible to me, lol. That's why I want the lowdown from you experienced mamas.

I like my bum genius os diapers, but they did not fit my daughter well until about 7 weeks (she was 7 lbs 8 oz at birth). We used fitteds and covers until then. Right now, my favorite diaper is the Softbum---it fits much better around the legs, which is where we had issues with the bum genius and happy heineys.

I'd also be really tempted to try the Thirstie duo diapers--they go from 6-14 and then 14-40 lbs.

I'm in a similar position. I am planning to buy one of each (along with Happy Heiny and a couple of others) in order to see which I like best, and then I will buy approx 20 of that kind for a total of 24 diapers, which I keep hearing is the optimal number. But we will use disposables until we figure out what kind to get.

-one 20 pk of bumgenius pockets would be enough (washing every other day), but it would be cutting it close!
-BG velcro sucks, get the snaps
-fuzzi bunz have a low rise and will leak if too big, but fit nice
-all one size dipes will be huge on a newborn, if $$ is the issue, Id go pfs and covers (id use imse vime or thirsties) til 14 lbs, then switch to one size pockets.
--my son has been using 15 one size BG from 14 lbs through now (28 lbs), I have replaced the elastic in all of them and converted them to all to snaps. This cost $5 per diaper, but I also got them all on sale for $15 instead of $18 originally. These will last forever lol. Id say definately worth it. And they never leak.
--I used FB exclusively as my nightime diaper til 9 mo, but my son always outgrew the rise.

*******18 preemie pfs and 4 thirsties covers would be fine to get you through washing every other day. note thristies covers run B-I-G, so xs will last awhile. And infant pfs are huge on a NB, preemies do last awhile.

Erin, thank you for that feedback! This is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. Can you buy them with snaps, or do you have to convert them yourself? I am like zero with sewing (despite my screen name, lol), otherwise I'd probably attempt to make my own fitteds.

BTW NSMomtobe, that is a really good idea about ordering one at a time and then picking your fav before ordering the whole 20pk. I kind of just want to pick, buy them, and be ready for when the babe comes, tho. I just want to feel prepared, you know?

I've tried both with my LO and here's my pro/con lists:

Bumgenious (3.0 one size with velcro)-

pros: stay soft on the inside, quick to put on squirmy babes, don't leak, great customer service (replaced a few pairs that had lost their sticky-ness after almost one year!)

cons: velcro loses stickiness eventually, don't fit little little babes (we started using them when dd was 12 lbs or so), olders can learn how to pull off the velcro

Fuzzibunz:

Pros: snaps are softer for carrying babes in just diaper, older babies can't undo snaps as easily

cons: it's slower to do 4 snaps which leads to more diaper change "impatience" for my active dd, get more "scratchy" than "fuzzi" after awhile (reminded me of the way the inside of a sweatshirt goes from cozy to clumpy), leaky

Overall bg won for me. We started with 8 of each but I ended up selling my fb to get more bg. That said, I know many families that have the exact opposite preference... you just never know what will work best for you and your babe. It wouldn't hurt to get a couple of each, try them, then stock up on the ones you like best. Numbers-wise: we EC part time and 16 diapers total is more than enough for us.

Hope that helps and have fun choosing!

i prefer bg right now, because dd wont hold still long enough for me to get snaps on her. they def do not seem to hold up as well as the bg do though. i love the fit of our softbums the most though (someone else said they liked the fit as well). ill be getting some more of those when i have some more $$ and saving the pockets for dh and daycare.

Do consider you might really seriously hate pockets we did. spent a small fortune on a full stash of one size pockets (wonderoos the one size wonder of the days ) and at first LOVED them then the stink started and the rash DH HATED them cause he hated dealing with the inserts or me having to run multiple loads to clean them. Then at barely two years old and no where close to potty learning our 25lb toddler out grew then (said they went to like 35lbs HA!) and we still had to buy new diapers. I'd honestly get a started set ofa few diffrent types and put aside another $200-$300 so when you really find what works best you can invest in that.

I know what you mean about being prepared, but we have enough disposables to last us a few weeks and I understand that the one-size cds especially do not fit newborns well anyway. DH is open to trying prefolds, which surprises me, so we'll try a few of those as well in the beginning.

I really like the idea of the BG because the velcro just seems like it would fit better, but I have heard that they stick together in the wash (as well as being easier for babies to undo). Anyway, I'm just scared to commit hundreds of dollars to one kind without trying it to see how it works with our family. It's good to read threads like this to see how they stand up to time as well.

True! I don't want to blow $ on dipes that we won't like. I'm just a little obsessed with at least having my newborn stash. I want to cross at least one thing off my list, lol!

Now I'm thinking that I will go ahead and order pre-folds/covers (the Indian prefolds are only $1) like Erinvjrn suggested, so we'll at least be covered for the newborn stage, since what I'm hearing is that the one sizes are not going to fit at first anyways. We'll maybe get a small pack of sposies for the meconium diapers coz that stuff stains! And I think your plan of getting one each of the OS type is a really wise idea. Leaning toward the BGs from what I'm hearing here, but it's hard to know without trying them out.

Gah! The other thing is that the BumRite site has the BG 20 pk for about $40-$60 less than cotton babies BUT only til Jan 7 . So I'm like, everybody raves about these dipes, they'd probably be fine, and THEY'RE ON SALE!!! You know? And BumRite lets you pick your colors, not just boy/girl (since we're not finding out). So bleh. I'm just going around in circles.
Hmm... It might be worth it then. As long as you have the prefolds as backup for the newborn stage. I wonder if BumRite ships to Canada.

Seriously, this. Synthetic material systems like pocket diapers are fine for some, but did not work at all for us. One size seems like a good idea, but you are compromising the fit in the early days (when leakage will drive you crazy) and later on too, if they are out grown before potty learning. I never recommend that people buy a whole set of anything before the baby comes. The one size pocket diaper brands you mentioned have big marketing dollars behind them, but I know many many people who regret buying them without trying other diaper styles. If I were having another one I wouldn't use either of those brands. YMMV of course.
I think it all comes down to personal preference and I'd say don't buy a whole lot until your baby is here and you can actually try the diapers for yourself.

I'm so glad I didn't invest in a large batch of Fuzzibunz. I almost did. I bought a couple to try and I hate them. I hate the snaps and they don't fit as well as other diapers on my kids.

I started out this time around with a huge stash of BGOS and I kind of regret that, but I sold off half of them. I love the BGs, but the OS don't fit my two in diapers that great. I still use them, but I use BG AIOs the most. It was worth buying the different sizes for us because they work so well for me. The fit is great. I prefer velcro, even if it looks ugly after awhile (although none of mine look that bad).
both. I have BG3.0 with velcro and they are not intimidating to the DH, sitters, daycare providers, grandparents, etc. They worked on 10lb. baby. They rub my 25lb. DD's chubby legs and I'm selling them to a new mom.

Love sized FB. Haven't tried OS. The fleece doesn't seem to rub on private parts when wet like the BGs do. Snaps give better fit if you ask me. Size medium can be worn for a LONG time.
Buying 24 of one diaper up front is tempting, but can be disastrous. At the very least, don't wash them all until you know which you like in actual use.

FB one-size will fit a newborn better b/c you can adjust the waist and leg sizes. I much prefer snaps to velcro - the velcro requires special care, and even then, doesn't always stay sticky.

Okay, I'm hearing you all. Thanks for talking me out of buying 30 diapers without testing them first.

I'm just going to chill out and order the prefolds/cover/snappies, and hope I can hang. But it's hard to hold back when THEY'RE ON SALE! Lol. Maybe I'll take NSMom's approach and just order one OS of each brand, then see what I like.

Just seems like the big diaper package would be a great request if we have a baby shower! But how can you ask for them if you're waiting to try them out first? Borrow a baby to diaper for a day? Heh.

some really good points that were made:

----dont wash more than like 3 until youre sure you want them.
----remember you can always sell what you dont like
----diaper chains from the dryer wear out your velcro even faster
---Im pretty sure you can buy BG in snaps, but I personally had mine converted and re-elastic'd by a diaper maker. So Im not positive

---I would definately have 2 aios in each size for outings (there are millions to choose from)
----my son went from xs-L in 1 yr, then once he became mobile he lost all the fatness and is now slender, so he is in medium longs. I ended up buying a full stash of xs/s and medium, but few larges that got me through as he grew into medium long, which actually a lot of diaper makers offer. He will never wear a large before he PLs lol. Hes a stick.

You can buy them and not wash them and many stores will let you return or exchange them. But I don't see not liking either of them, really.
