Reflux?

Ds HAS to be held upright after nursing, or he's a screamy, spit up-y, hiccuping mess.

Nighttime feedings are a nightmare, he nurses and then will only settle on my chest, if I try to lay him down he squirms and then screams and usually spits up or has a burp. So I can't side lie nurse and go back to sleep. So between feeding sitting up, changing, and then settling him back to sleep, it's time to feed again! No one is getting any sleep.

I'm starting to feel discouraged b/c dd was a reflux baby and didn't sleep until she was 2!

FWIW, I'm off dairy... Ds is 12 days old.

Anyone BTDT? Advice?

Yes, BTDT. Pretty much exactly how you described. For me it was dairy AND soy, so if dairy isn't doing the trick, try soy as well.

DS is now 5 months and much, much better. The spitting up continued for a while, so we still had to elevate him while he slept, etc. But the discomfort (screaming) ended pretty quickly after eliminating the culprit foods.

Starting about two months ago, I stopped burping him at night, and just set him down immediately after feeding him. About a month ago, I stopped elevating his sleeping space. I also started side nursing more often (up until then I always had to nurse cradle style, otherwise it would all come up and through his nose too).

To some extent, they just have to grow out of it, but I think the diet change can help with the discomfort they feel with the reflux -- it makes sense because if they aren't able to digest something in your diet, they'll make much more acid, so the regurgitation becomes painful rather than just annoying.

Are you willing to try reflux drugs? They made a big difference for my son. Good luck!

Also BTDT. We tried Zantax with no luck, but Prevacid did wonders. At 9 months old and going COMPLETELY off dairy (including trace, for multiple weeks), we were able to get her off Prevacid.

But if #2 has reflux issues, I have no qualms about going to medication. It made a huge difference in quality of life for all of us.
