we gave ds yams~ his first food, 4 days ago. he has eaten it every day since~ and loves it! he has also had a red bottom for the last 2 days. is this related? does it mean he not ready? hes a week short of 6 months. he eats and loves the yams, and today we added avocado. what do you think?

It could be related. It could also be unrelated. Hard to know! Has he had any other signs of stomach distress? If he's also gassy or constipated, or if you're seeing diarrhea, etc., that's an additional sign that the yams are a problem. Check for other unusual skin reactions, too. If you don't notice any signs other than the diaper rash, it's quite possible it's totally unconnected to the food.
We haven't seen any reactions to food with DD until we gave her mangoes yesterday morning - by late afternoon she was having clear stomach pain, and by evening she had a scarlet-red, very painful diaper rash that went away by the next day. It was really obvious to us that it was a food reaction rather than anything else.
Try taking the food out until the diaper rash clears up, then reintroduce. If the same reaction happens immediately, you're probably seeing a food reaction. Diaper rash can be so many things that I wouldn't leap to the conclusion that it's food-related.
