not really sure if this is the right place to post this, but I figure some of you home schooling families are learning to play musical instruments.

anyone know of a good 1/4 sized guitar that will stay in tune?

got a cheap one for my DD for christmas & the darn tuning pegs are not tight enough & it slips out of tune so quickly.

thanks in advance

Do you mean 1/2 size? I've never seen a 1/4 size though I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Kids grow so fast and even for a preschooler, a 1/2 size would probably work OK.

I've heard many people say, including 2 guitar teachers, to not expect to pay less than $100 for a child's guitar if you want them to actually learn on it and for it to have a decent sound.

www.westmusic.com has some nice quality 1/2 size guitars and pkgs. We have one from there and have been happy with it so far. We've had it for a year and 8 yr old DD is taking lessons with it. I think we spent about $110 for one of the homeschool pkgs.

I suggest one of their electric tuners too for about $12.

how old is your dd? i'm sure you could buy a decent one at a 1/4 size, but she would outgrow it so quickly, ykwim? my dd uses a 3/4 size and she's 8. we own a yamaha acoustic. hth.

Ibanez makes a good quality guitar in smaller sizes. They are beautiful and stay in tune well. My daughter (8) and I each have one and love them.

Please do not tell me that inexpensive means DD can't learn on it. We got a First Act 1/4 size guitar for her because she wants guitar lessons and I found a place that has them sort of affordable for her age. She's very excited about it, and if they say the guitar won't work she'll be devastated. She used her gift money to buy it and it's really all we could afford.

You'll have to tune it more often, but she can certainly learn with her guitar. Make sure you keep it out of direct sunlight and away from temperature extremes and it will help keep it in tune.

You may be able to tighten the pegs, too.

We have a scaled down Fender acoustic which we love. We bought it when our son was a baby and the sound is great. My husband even likes to play on it. The only downside is it's a steel string which is a little tough on small fingers and not as forgiving as nylon. Love the sound though.
Last Christmas, our daughter (4yo at the time) got a mini Fender Squire electric which is also a really nice little guitar and good enough for grownups to play
