Travel Immunizations to India

Hi. I am traveling with my 3 year old boy and twin girls who will be 17 months when we travel to New Delhi, India. (My DH is Indian and my son was born in India) The travel nurse is recommending a whole lot of shots and also malaria meds. I never used malaria meds for my son and he was 15 months when we returned. Have any of you made this trip and what immunizations/medications did you use for your trip?

Thanks,
Sarah

We had had DS immunized for Polio and the DTaP when we went to India, but that was more because those were immunizations I wanted done anyways. We didn't give him any special immunization or need any Malaria meds. We were in the New Delhi area for our two week trip to visit DH's extended family.

We lived in India when I was a kid, and we got Hepatitis shots in addition to the regular ones that you would get here, too. I don't think at the time you could get shots for Malaria, but I remember taking pills during the worst of mosquito season (monsoon).

I don't have any advice to offer.. I just wanted to say "Hi!"...

I am married to an Indian, and we have an-almost 2 year old boy.. he was born in India, but we returned to the US when he was 2 months old..

My husband surprised us with a visit to India in August.. I vaguely knew he was interested in going back to visit his family, but I didn't expect him to buy the tickets so soon..

We spent 9 weeks in Hyderabad, India and didn't get any immunizations for us or our son..

As long as you keep the windows closed at night, etc you wouldn't worry about malaria..

We kept the windows open and suffered mosquito bites.. my husband and I contracted Chikungunya (google it if interested) and so did his mom and sister and pretty much house in our neighborhood had a few people with chikungunya.. it's been over 2 months and we're still suffering from joint pain, but it's getting better.. it was so bad that we thought we wouldn't be able to stand traveling and we extended our trip by 10 days!

my dh is from india and we took our now 3 1/2 ds to india last january to new delhi when he was 2 1/2. He is partially vaxed. (he got all vaxes up until 6 months, when we decided to stop vaxing him completely). We didn't take any precautions for any diseases, other than bringing deet spray. Ds did get bit by one mosquito, but nothing became of it. We did go in the colder season which there are way less mosquitos, but still plenty flying about. When we returned to the states we did end up taking him to urgent care because of a fever, which turned out to be an ear infection from virus he had, which made him very conjested, but the doctor didn't seemed concerned about the mosquito bite. I did a bit of research on malaria when ds got the bite and from what i read the more deadly strain is found in sahara in africa, but malaria can lay dorment for years...I would just bring lots of deet spray and spray it on the bedding, clothes and keep as much body covered as possible. Those mosquitos are very thirsty though, as my ds was always wearing long sleeves and he got bit on the neck...Also remember mosquitos like to come out in the dawn and dusk hours, so try to stay indoors with the windows shut at those times. HTH, and good luck on your trip!

Also from reading up on the malaria meds, they are the same they give both before and after infection, so just keep that in mind. I would probably pass on them if i were you, but talk it over with your dh and decide together what you feel is best for your family.

since last january was my first trip to india, i got a lot of good advice from this website: http://www.indiamike.com/india/ you may want to check that out for some answers to your questions...

Hi. Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I decided against the malaria pills, as the side effects can be quite bad. I also decided to just get caught up with regular immunizations. Thanks, Sarah
