Mamas of late crawling older babies- talk to me!

DS is 8mo today and is not crawling yet... he can pull to stand, but only by holding onto my hands. He can roll from belly to back but very seldom rolls from back to belly (he has done it like twice and thats it). He has floor time pretty much all day, when I'm not holding him or he's not in the Ergo, I'm usually playing on the floor with him

He wears cloth diapers, which adds a little bulk to his bum, and he has more of a small rugged build as opposed to being long and slim

I promised myself that I wouldn't compare my baby to other babies at playgroup/ be super weird about hitting milestones as I know he is going to develop in his own time... so I'm totally not freaking out ...but obviously I'm thinking about it enough to take the time to post about it lol... just curious what others might have to say

My DD is three weeks older than your DS, and she just figured out how to crawl last week. I don't think 8 months qualifies as "late" when it comes to crawling, does it? I guess I would consider 10-11 months "late" but still probably not a problem.

my baby book says 7-9mos is pretty normal for crawling, but they don't even have it as a typical 'milestone' since its so different for every baby. Its pulling up/walking/etc that are important. So I think if he's pulling up (even using you) that's pretty normal.

I don't think its cloth diapers or even build that drives mobility milestones - its got to be all temperament. My DS is built very similar to yours, and also is in cloth, but crawled at a bit over 5 months, but he's been interested in being mobile from day 1! On the flip side, verbally he's a tiny bit behind what the charts say he should be doing by now.

My 7 month old shows no inclination at all to be on his front and I'm not sure he's ever rolled onto his front from his back. But, he loves standing, so I figure he might just walk, not crawl. I think all babies are different and I don't count 8 months as late, the guidance over here is 9-10 months for normal babies to start crawling (normal used as in average there!). So I wouldn't worry at all if I were you. And in fact, in another month, I won't worry either when he still shows no inclination to do it!

One thing I've read, if it really does bother you, is to give him sets of tummy time throughout the day, with a toy out of reach just in front of him. Aim for at least 5 sets of around ten minutes. That might help. Be warned you will get cries of frustration.

My first was a non crawler, iirc when looking for numbers at that time, a full 25% of babies don't crawl prior to walking.

I thought DD was going the same way, but suddenly at around her 1st birthday, she figured out crawling, which then seemed to delay her walking.

DD2 is 7mths now and everyone keeps saying things about her being on the move soon, but I'm not expecting anything! She moves enough by wriggling and rolling I don't need any more!

You think 8 months is late? Can I gently laugh at you
I rmemember pretending not to care too

Dd was..lets see if I can remember. 10? no at least 11 months. Maybe close to 12. She crawled late, then after a few weeks of crawling she walked (at mid/late 13 months). She is a graceful and athletic 7yr old today.
When she finally did advance to walking she was so happy she was screeching with laughter and had a HUGE smile because she had figured it out and it was AWESOME
I dont think she thought anything about figuring out crawling. It was marginally higher than belly scooting, so no big deal to her maybe.

8 months is considered late?!?! DD is 8 months and isn't crawling yet, and I'm not worried at all!
It will come soon enough, don't stress about it...

8 months is not late imo. That said, try to relax. Once he starts crawling you'll look longingly back on these immobile days!!!!

BunnySlippers- you can totally laugh at me! MDC is my safe place to unleash the totally ridiculous, worrier within sometimes

Thank you so much Mamas, feeling way better. Ok so 'late' totally was not the right word... how about 'not quite yet' instead

I never crawled... then when I was 2 the doctor told my mom that babies that don't crawl get dyslexia So then my mom and dad went throught this whole thing of teaching me to crawl and trying to get me to do it regularly.
DS1 didn't crawl until he was about 10 months. Our pediatrician told us she doesn't consider crawling a milestone anymore now that babies are put to sleep on their backs.

Our DS1 didn't crawl until two days before his first birthday. Then he didn't walk until he was 17 months. Today he is a very athletic 6.5 yo. He does gymnastics and plays baseball. Once he started walking he progressed very quickly to running, jumping, and climbing everything, and caught up very quickly to his age peers.

My niece that's a couple months older than Sophia. Started crawling when she was 10 months and she seems to be perfectly fine.

When Sophia discovered rolling over from her back to her tummy, she stopped rolling over the other way. I dont know why, she just wouldnt do it and would get mad and I had to roll her. Now she seems to get to places by rolling over, wiggling backwards. Sometimes Im not really sure how she got to a certain spot, but I wouldnt say she's really crawling yet, but it's always trying to get things, but I'd definetly say she's a way more verbal baby than anything else.

She doesnt even really likes to sit, she knows how to. She just doesnt seem to like it. She does love standing, will stand at the table and bang on it forever and be the happiest baby, but she doesnt stands up on her own, but she does try. When I hold her hands she does takes some steps with me, so I guess different babies figure out different things at different times, it's all about what seems the most fun to them.

nak

DD was almost 9 months before she crawled, and then she started walking at 10.5 months. All is well!

My dd is 8.5 months and is not crawling either. She is the one of the 2 LAST babies in her playgroup not to be crawling. So I understand that internal *mama worry.* I get it too. I actually posted on MDC about it a few weeks back! She's not pulling up to stand either, like you say your LO is...However I try to focus on the things she is doing. She started to clap, imitate sounds, and is starting to wave, and I swear trying to talk. So I think that maybe she will be early to talk, but late to be mobile?

She's got tons of long curly hair, so whenever someone asks me "Is she crawling yet?" I say "No, she's spending her energy on growing hair."

orion is 16 months old. He started crawling about a week before his first birthday. He is still not walking. I try not to stress it but when I read things like 90% of babies are walking by 15 months it makes me a little uncomfortable but then I look at him and he crawls super fast and it works well for him so why walk when it would slow him down. He can stand and even bend down to pick up a toy. I really though he would have walked by Christmas but instead I got his first wave. I will take that. So OP my "late crawler" is a "late walker". You little one is so cute. Your baby has the sweetest little cheeks. Oh and my guy is a late teether too. He only has 1 little tooth. We call him the one tooth wonder. He is also still very much so a baby. He babbles but hasn't said any words yet. I was talking to a friend and asked if she thought the late walking was related to me wearing him and her response was "being close to you is what is important right now, he has teh rest of his life to walk" she is so right! Relish in his lack of mobility because sooner than you think he will be all over the place.

Ds crawled 6 months...Dd is turning one in a week and is just starting the wounded soldier crawl...im enjoying the peace of mind that comes with putting dd down and her still being there

Violets8, your DS sounds similar to our DS1 that I posted about above - now a very athletic, coordinated 6.5 yo. It is hard I know to have your kid seem to be the last to do things, months and months later than same age babies. We were concerned about possible delays. So many people asked us if there were "problems". But he caught up later with no special help, and no differences in abilities with age peers. He just had an unusual timeline for when he did these things.

OP, I think you are worrying about this very early. Some kids crawl very early, some never crawl, some walk early, some walk late....there is such a wide range of normal development. Enjoy your baby ! They all grow up soon enough.

my son didn't crawl until 9 1/2 m, then he walked the day after he turned 1 and he's been an incredibly coordinated, balanced, athletic kid since then. He was climbing ladders, jumping, running, riding a 2-wheel bike, and doing the monkey bars long before many of his baby friends who crawled (and/or walked) months before he did. Not that it matters!! I'm just saying. It didn't really seem to correlate with physical coordination a year or two or three later. The ped definitely told us that "crawling is not a developmental milestone". I don't think it really bothered me that much, but I guess I did ask her at some point.

my daughter, now, she started crawling a bit before 6m.

oh yeah, my son also didn't get teeth until 11 1/2 months and he's got a full mouth of them now!

DS is 16 months and didn't start crawling until he was 11-12 months old. He's still not walking yet either, and prefers to army crawl, but can crawl on his hands and knees when he feels like it.
