ETA: I am cross posting this in SN parenting too.
DS1 is 4. Just turned 4 in Nov.
He has an expressive speech delay. he has other sn .. but we are not sure how / if they will effect acidemic ablity.
His speech delay is ONLY expressive --
he has an IEP for speech.
He was 100% non-verbal when he was 3. so for him to be talking a lot now, as he is, is WONDERFUL.
the issue is that he can not make most of the sounds in the language .. he has yet to learn to make his mouth (tounge, jaw, lips, etc) to do what he wants it to do all the time.
he has a great vocb -- or to me it is great since 12 months ago he had NONE -- but most if, most people can't understand, and even i have trouble with a good part of it.
so he is strating to want to do school work, we read all the time, and he is really into worksheets.
well i am thinking of how to do phoncs with him ... it is going to have to be mostly receptive, i assume.
he is in ST and Miss Em is working with him, and i work with him constantly (b, b is for bat, ball, boy, b, b, b, bbbbb bat ....yaddda yadda yadda)
so he can pick letters out .. "which is the B" "which is the Z"
his fine motor is behind too so he can't really write too much -- he can make a lot of the letter, but page size
should i just wait on language (expressive) to catch up?
I don't want to hold him back and assume he can't do something jsut cuz he can't / don't talk ...
hurmp
not sure what i should be doing, or if i should drop it till he can talk better -- but kids that don't talk can still learn to read --
thoughts??
