Son wants a "castle" cake??

Any ideas? He'll be 3 this weekend, and he wants a castle cake. He went to a birthday party & the girls (sisters) had a castle cake. It was bought from an expensive bakery & there's no way I can do that.

Is there anything I could do with basic cake making skills, pans, etc.? I have no real decorating expertise, but am willing to try, and hey, he's 3, and isn't going to nit-pick.

The cake @ the party had chocolate dipped ice cream cones as turrets, which I could do. Other than that, I'm stumped.

You can click on each of the thumbnails here and get directions if the person submitted them. I love this site!

I just quickly googled and found this site, which gives you a lot to choose from:

http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/castle-cake.html

Remember that you can always cut cake into the forms that you want like smaller squares or circles, and place on the cake where you'd like and ice over. It helps if you freeze the cake before cutting it.

If you pile on a lot of extras on a particular layer, you'll want to cut cardboard and cover it with tin foil to place under the layer and use smaller cut dowels in the base layer - but I doubt if you'll need to do it if you go simple. You just don't want the top layers to get so heavy that they sink into the bottom layer.

You can use icing to glue on candy decorations. Use a graham cracker with licorice strings for a drop down door for the front of the castle if you want to go the extra mile......

If you really want to have fun, and it's pretty simple, you can melt candy melts in a plastic bag (you can buy them colored or color some white ones) and pipe it out on a piece of waxed paper for some additional decorations. When it cools it will be hardened so you can stand them up on a cake if you poke them in, or they'll rest on the side.

(sorry to go on and on......I really loved cake decorating in a former life..... )

I am the most uncreative mom ever.I have a bundt pan shaped like a castle and I just dust powdered sugar over it to keep the details-snow!

I have the castle shaped bundt pan too, and I LOVE it. I like to decorate it kind of like a gingerbread house and fill the inside (the hollow part) up with M&M's that spill out when you cut into it.

I taught a medieval history class at my highschool once and used this cake as the end of the year treat. Even the highschool kids loved it.

Know anyone you can borrow one of these from? Or you can get one from Amazon for $26 (with free shipping): http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Ca.../dp/B000F5M044

Very cool...I am going to end spending too much money...DD is always asking for different kinds of cakes and I am not very good at cake decorating, so what a great alternative!

i don't know if you have them in the states but we have Bulk Barns...which are bulk stores that have a ton of cake decorating supplies AND rent out cake pans. It's beyond super cheap like 2.00 a day

Those castle pans were on clearance at habitat housewares a while back.. I would call around and see if you can buy one on clearance. Michaels had them too but I don't recall how much they were. Seriously I would hunt around for a deal.. maybe craigslist?

I made one for one of my girls' birthday. I got the recipe from my mom who got it from a magazine--Sunset, I think. I no longer have the recipe but it was a pound cake recipe baked in an assortment of containers--loaf pans, square pan, metal coffee and juice cans. The roofs were construction paper. Flags were made from bamboo skewers and construction paper. Here are some ideas from google: http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/castle-cake.html Basicly, you bake the cake/s in different shapes, put them together in a castle shape, decorate with frosting and ice cream cones.

Op I've made my kids castle cakes a few times (like the ones in the first link someone posted) and they are very simple and use regular cake pans.

-Just make two layers of cake in whatever size you want your cake to be(two 8" or 9" square or round pans, or two 13x9" layers if you want a really big cake),

-frost it in whatever colors you wish and add the ice cream cones at the corners or wherever you want turrets.

-Now you can add details, either by piping them with those decorator tubes you can buy in the grocery store, or by using candy or cookies for details(things like gumdrops or squares of chocolate bar make great crenelations along the top of the castle walls, the chocolate bar squares also make great window/shutters and castle doors etc.)

If you want to make a castle with some towers that are higher than others just bake some extra batter in a cupcake/muffin tin and stack and frost the cupcakes with the rest of the cake(you can run a drinking straw through the "tower" and cake for stability).

That's all there is to it, they are surprisingly easy and look great even if you go really basic.

Well, the cake itself was awful (a gluten free mix that was, ugh), but it looked pretty cute, and DS was really happy! Actually, your tips are appreciated, b/c my DD's bday is coming up in a few weeks & she has also asked for a castle cake!
