Vitamin D

I live up in a northern state, Minnesota. So getting it naturally from the sun isn't happening right now

How much here does everyone take? As in supplements. Right now I'm taking in about 1200iu's a day. I've found some conflicting things on how much is right to take, but I'm guessing I could even probably take in more without having any issues.

I am following this since I respect Dr. Tenpenny.

I am in MN, too and I tested at 42 after supping CLO and 1000ius/day and being outside every day for 4+ hours w/o sunscreen this summer. I supp about 5000ius.

I have heard from several people that tested low that their dr's recommended upping D CONSIDERABLY right after testing low "to get them back ontrack" and then going down to about 2000 a day. I tested "dangerously low" (although I didn't ask my numbers) earlier this year and my OB wanted to get me on 50,000 a week (prescription). I didn't want to do a prescription though so I am doing about 2000 a day (which when I tested, I was on prenatals only now I do the prenatals with additional D3 from Enzymatic? chocolate flavored chewables).

I am probably still lower than my Dr would like, but I am focusing on it now, where as before I didn't even know it was a problem.

I think the vitamin D council discussion of the topic is pretty good, I just ignore their vitamin A stuff. I'm taking around 8000 IU for a while, then I'm going to test and see where I've ended up and adjust from there.

I gave some more thought to your comments OP, and I think the important factor here is that some of us ARE in northern climates. Our dietary needs then for D, would be different than people in more southern climates (I would think).

I take 2400 IU of D2 a day as a pregnant vegan in a Northern latitude. I was tested pre-pregnancy and was within the range of normal, and I'll retest again once the baby is born. If I'm low I'll up my dosage to make sure enough is going to my breast milk (and me!)

I have also read wildly differing recommendations and I think the best way to approach D is just to get tested over a period of time and figure out what dosage works best for you that way.

I live in Arizona and I recently got tested and my Vitamin D was at 32. I take about 4,500 iu's per day. I take (2) 2,000 iu gel caps and then there are 500 iu's in my multi vitamin.

Thank you so much for the Tenpenny link, very helpful!

We have no insurance, so I'm going to have to pass on testing my levels. Maybe next year we will be in a different spot there lol!
