Tri-cyclen Lo and BF

Thread Starter
My Dr. just prescribed Tri-cyclen Lo (low-hormone birth control pill). I'm 8 weeks post-partum, and she told me I should start it asap. I'm worried about what it will do to my milk supply (I BF on demand, second baby, never had any issues with BF and great little nurser). Anyone care to share their experience with BF while on birth control pill? I cannot use an IUD due to past infections, and cannot use progesterone due to bone density issues, so I am limited in my bc choices.

Thanks!

No personal experience, but I'd worry about supply with any dual hormone contraceptive pill. Is there anyway you'd consider a barrier method (condoms?) until 3 months postpartum. Personally I'd feel more confident about my supply and recovering from a supply dip (if necessary) at 3 months than 2.

What about a diaphragm or cap? I know that personally, I would NOT be taking Tri-cyclen that soon postpartum.

I wouldn't take it. All the research I have read says it will affect milk supply. If you are set on BF, I wouldn't chance it.

i wouldn't do it either!!!! i tried the progesterone only pill when my daughter was about that age and my supply was almost dry within 48 hours. so something like tri-cyclen is probably going to have more of an effect. of course, that pill affected me back in the day way before i had kids, so...... but i'd be VERY wary/careful before diving in. if i were you, i'd really look into a non-hormone form of birth control. good luck!
