[QUOTE=lucifugous;14900454]Kate, unemployed single mama to D

Goals and Amounts for January
29 days with no unnecessary spending: 7/29
15+ days with $0 spent: 5/31
No eating out that I pay for all month: 8/31
5 items decluttered /day plus /item in: 142/220
Eat well within food budget: $112/$280
Set expenses estimated: $309/$400
Track travel expenses: $0
Unnecessary spending: $6

1-
2-
3-bought groceries , used close to 1/4 of monthly budget
4- returned a couple Christmas gifts, now have $37 store credit at JCPenney's- eta I have about that much at Toys R Us too.. hmmm..
5-grabbed an onion and a zucchini at the store <$2, + a splurge of $6
oh, and paid all the bills! $309 Most months it's more like $200.
6-
7-
8- groceries were $46 and I discovered that a Starbucks card I got in a Christmas grab bag 3 or 4 yrs ago still had its full value of $25 so with that I treated myself to a decaf drink
9-
10-
11- planned lunch out for my brother's birthday (my dad's treat), possibly next shopping trip

I didn't count the Starbucks as a spend because it's a gift card that can only be used at Starbucks and well... that is always unnecessary! I did enjoy and appreciate it very much.

So far:
Key: No spending at all ; Only necessary spending: ; Unplanned, unecessary spending:
1/ -
2/ - Allowance payout
3/ -
4/ - Groceries, b'day present for DS (2nd hand drum kit from friend who really needed the cash)
5/ - Electricity bill
6/ - lunch boxes for kids. Useful, but we didn't actually need them. And school uniforms for kids.
7/ - school supplies for kids, chicken and a couple of groceries.
8/- Kids were away and DH wanted to get takeaway and DVDs. I had allocated on takeaway this month, so I suppose this is it. Cranky with him that he refused to pay for his DVDs out of his allowance. (Note to self: need to find balance).
9/- DH dragged me into the sports shop and we bought snorkel sets for him and the kids. Good thing they all have b'days coming up as these will be birthday presents. Girls wanted new boogie boards, so they had to buy them with their own money.

I also organised the pantry yesterday, and sorted out a very simple financial system that will hopefully streamline the budgeting process.

I commented yesterday that I was NOT doing well on the no spend thing.. I repeat that comment today... I actually talked myself OUT of a purchase today.. (I spied a wonderful looking/feeling comforter a Marshels when I went in to look for new mittens for DS who has lost one of his..) I told DH about it and he talked me back INTO it, since neither of us really cares for our present comforter.. (it's stiff/ uncomftable.. not practical with a child or cat, for multiple reasons, main one being it is dry clean only! ) so, we got the new comfy comforter and the old one will be Freecycled...

As for groceries.. I gave into drool... no, seriously... I've been looking at this blog with the most glorious looking recipes, and I want to make them all NOW!! But of course I didn't have some of the ingredients at home.. Soo.... and the rest as they say is history.. For those that might be curious the blog in question, must come with the following warning: This site WILL cause you to drool, and inspire you to cook all sorts of new recipes.. If you follow it, it WILL be hazardous to your waistline!! Pioneer Woman Cooking /

9-Ran out for some dill, ended up spending $8. The other items were not necessary, yet I don't feel this meets the criterion for one of only two unnecessary spending days I allow myself the whole month- especially since it's all food and none will go to waste. So I added a category for unplanned grocery spending. When it was warmer, D & I walked up to the grocery store almost daily so I think I'm doing ok.
10- tagged along to two stores and still spent nothing!
11- planned lunch out for my brother's birthday (my dad's treat)
next shopping trip to the store where produce is cheaper - might delay until Friday and just get a couple veg Monday
