Kate, unemployed single mama to D

Goals and Amounts for January
29 days with no unnecessary spending: 13/29
15+ days with $0 spent: 9/31
No eating out that I pay for all month: 14/31 --100% so far
5 items decluttered /day plus /item in: 224/245
Eat well within food budget: $137/$280 in 4 trips
Set expenses: $328/$400
Track travel expenses: $20
Unnecessary spending: $6
Unplanned grocery trips: 1=$8
Find a job: got some suggestions to improve my resume... made dozens of calls while my ex was entertaining D on Tuesday. Called every business I could find on google maps that I would be able to get to in under an hour with my current transportation situation... not one was hiring :/

1-
2-
3-bought groceries , used close to 1/4 of monthly budget
4- returned a couple Christmas gifts, now have $37 store credit at JCPenney's- eta I have about that much at Toys R Us too.. hmmm..
5-grabbed an onion and a zucchini at the store <$2, + a splurge of $6
oh, and paid all the bills! $309 Most months it's more like $200.
6-
7-
8- groceries were $46
10- tagged along to two stores and still spent nothing!
11- planned lunch out for my brother's birthday (my dad's treat)
12- pretty much stayed home
13- $17 in groceries, right on track! Still need to run to a different store (need a car to get there) for a few things...
14- spending money is just not an option, so it is a lot easier for me to stick to this challenge than it would be if I had a little extra to blow!

count me in (for the last half anyway)

a. Who you are - Wife to a wonderful DH and mother of one DS-8.

b. Where you are going - We just moved to a very small community, hoping to pay off debt, sell our house (currently being rented out) and save to build a house

c. How you plan to get there - no shopping at Wal-Mart this month, spending only what we budget, eating at home and saving every penny!

KEY
- no spending!

- stayed within the budget

- spent on something not on budget

15 - - DH's cigarettes $6.71 (not my fav way to spend, but at least it's in the budget

Goals and Amounts for January
29 days with no unnecessary spending: 13/29, which is to say:
2 or less unnecessary spend days: 2/2
15+ days with $0 spent: 9/15 in 15 days- on track
No eating out that I pay for all month: 15/31 --100% so far
decluttering: goal exceeded!
Eat well within food budget: $137/$280 in 4 trips
Set expenses: $328
Track travel expenses: $20

14-
15- bought a bottle of booze for the freezer ...and a bottle of white wine for a soup I'm making next week.. still counted the wine against the "unnecessary" dollar count since I chose the recipe/ will drink the remainder and it can't count toward our food budget since I use Link.

I went back though all my expenses this month, trying to figure out how I could have messed up so badly that I'd be hitting my budget limit by the 15th with no wild indulgences. Results: 1) I forgot to account for some recurring monthly expenses, like our rental agent, that are taken out of the rental income rather than coming directly out of the checking account. 2) The rental agent did some repairs in December and charged us this month. 3) The rental agent decided to put a couple hundred extra dollars in escrow this month. 4) Unexpected medical bills: SIX HUNDRED FREAKING DOLLARS. The insurance company has finally paid out a claim for ds' therapies that they've been fighting since August, but now that it is settled I had to kick in my 20% for that plus the 20% for his last month of therapy.

So. 2010 starting off with a bang. BANG. Quicken now tells me we will finish January in the red. I would just luurve to not have that happen. If we could just squeak through in Jan., with the property tax, car registration and these damn medical bills all striking at once, February would be a breeze...

Income from all sources for January 2010: $6691
Actually spent in January 2010: $5713.64

14-
15-spent $32- definitely "unnecessary"
16-60 cent library fine (tried to "renew" online, couldn't get a connection that night grrrr) - I am still counting this as a no-spend day!
17-took the long trek all the way to DX's, spent $5 on the metra and charged I think $5 in bus fare on my transit card. The $20 already in this category went toward loading said card, but now I realize I would like to see how much I actually spend on transit, not just how frequently I go through $20 and need to reload. So I will that back down to the actual- once the amount I actually spent shows up on the website other than our train and bus fare, we didn't spend a cent! it helped a lot that Jamba Juice was closed :P

I've been a bit lax about updating, but I'm doing fairly well:

My key:
No spend:
Planned spend:
Unplanned spend:
Credit card use:

I'm only tracking spending outside fixed bills - so not accounting for mortgage, daycare, cell phone etc.

1/1:
1/2: $2.99 movie rental
1/3:
1/4:
1/5: $100 ER copay from Nov 2009
1/6: $235 mostly planned spend though a bit on sheets
1/7: $20 babysitter
1/8:
1/9: Fidelity investment fees
1/10: unexpected medical bill of my late not-quite ex's
1/11:
1/12:
1/13: groceries and a haircut (which I paid for in cash, no credit!)
1/14: purchased MS Office for home for $10 through work discount
1/15:
1/16: household items, sitter, parking
1/17:

I'm happiest about no credit card use so far - that's always been a challenge for me.

GOALS/KEY:
16/31 no spend

20/31 workout (30-day Shred)
Budgeted spend/shopping days
Spent beyond budget

1/1 $7 movie - Up in the Air (btw, it got great reviews, but I didn't like it that much)
1/2 gas, lots of returns, so got merchandise credit at various stores
1/3 paid bills
1/4 1/16 1/20
1/5 2/20 2/16
1/6 3/20 bike helmet for DS1
1/7 4/20 3/16
1/8 5/20 4/16
1/9 Darn, had to erase my workout smilie here. But 5/16
1/10 6/16
1/11 6/20 gas
1/12 7/20 groceries *although I will admit to buying a few unplanned, sinful treats*
1/13 7/16
1/14 bvds for ds2 and laser printer - unplanned, unbudgeted 8/20
1/15 groceries
1/16 diapers, workout dvds 9/20
1/17 bills
1/18 first Homeschooling curriculum purchase! Soooo excited!

Still Psyched up for the rest of this month! However, I would do a lot better if I got back on the cloth diapering bandwagon. AND if I would stop buying stuff, changing my mind, returning it, or getting a price adjustment/coupon price, etc. What a headache for the expense logs. Wastes my time and money. But learned about SWAGBUCKS so I should be getting a tiny bit of money back (eventually)!
