Everything was delivered yesterday.

I also donated a new book and a check to the local library on my DD's behalf. (We donate to a charity of our choice during our birthday months. DD chose the library this year.) = 1 (physical item)

My plan to do finances was realized yesterday, but I did not get to the paperwork decluttering. Maybe today...

celebrating the small victories! 18 magazines, 1 bag of recycled paper (junk found around the house), and 16 random bathroom bottles (old hotel lotions etc) are gone!

I have decided to attempt this challenge, although it is already April, I will give it a shot. Looks like I will have to get rid of about 50 things a week to make the total of 2010 by the end of the year!!

One thing can someone please clarify for me? It seems that some people are counting individual items while others are counting a bag of things as one item?

That's true! Do whatever works for you. To most of us it makes sense to count a stack or a bag or box of paper as 1, 10 or 50 items (pick what seems reasonable) for instance, but if you want to count each individual sheet so you feel like you are making progress then by all means do it! whatever gets you there

All that stuff went out the door last week and we already have a new pile going. DH found a pair of shorts that don't fit his body well nor his lifestyle any longer. DD found a shirt that is way too short (fits her otherwise, though, LOL). I'll count those when they leave the premises.

Meanwhile, I did some paper decluttering and recycled a large basket's worth. = 3 (I still have shredding and more paperwork to go through, but this is out of our house now.)

OK I threw out at least 150 clothing items over the last 2 weeks...it took 2 trips to donate those to the charity bin.

This week I also I threw out 12 plastic containers with lids missing
and 20 pairs old underwear and 15 plastic cutlery

Today...
1 novelty pen not working
1 novelty toothbrush of son's not working, both into the bin

To donate:
2 unused notepads
8 sticker books
8 happy meal toys
4 toys

15 pairs of DH's old undies...he has no idea and bet he won't notice them gone, teehee...

Whew! It was only 9:30 pm, but it felt like midnight! Busy, tiring, and exciting day today!

Lots of decluttering left the premises today, too!

* Donated 21 random items to two neighbors.
* Recycled 47 old magazines (craft 50%, house/home decor 25%, specialized 25%) of mine. I kept two from my entire stash and I am bringing them on vacation in a few days and will donate or recycle them along the way.
* DH recycled 15 old magazines (66% professional, 34% personal) of his. [ALL the mags were years and years old, so not worth donating.]

Decluttered the filing cabinet. Whew! What a CHORE!!!! Normally, I only count each waste basket full as 3 for this challenge. Not this time, Baby. I counted each file I went through (43) and apparently I skipped this task last year since all of 2008 was still in residence. Also, I don't think I've gone through some of these files in a decade or more! DH helped me with the receipts files. OY! We found oodles of receipts for items we haven't owned in a l-o-n-g time. I skipped the "house" files and the "product documentation" A-Z file sorter and the "electronic manuals" on purpose. The latter two have been decluttered recently enough and the first one will naturally get decluttered because we are going through a re-fi right now. As it is, we got rid of two one-foot high piles! (One was non-sensitive recycling and the other needs to be shredded.)

We also added some items to the charity pile, but I will count those items when they leave the house.

eek, it's been over 2 months since I last updated, naughty me, I ran out of steam! But now I am back

I'm slowly catching up with the thread... rere!!!!! Well done

Now, over the past 2 months I have decluttered a few things, but I haven't kept track of numbers. I do have one full sealed charity bag from that period so I'll start with that, I can't actually remember what's in it (isn't that very bad?!) so I'll just count it as one unit...

1 bag of random stuff that I can't remember - charity
2 leaky vacuum storage bags - bin
3 of DH's shirts - charity
9 children's clothes - charity
1 pile duplicate photos - shredded then binned
1 pile old blank negatives (why was I keeping them?) - binned
1 catalogue - recycling
1 pile of receipts - recycling

I also let go of a lot of crafty bits and bobs to friends over the past few weeks, I had fun sorting my unwanted remnants etc. into fun packages for their children to play with. I think there were 5 packages in total, so...

5 assorted craft packages - friends
5 old envelopes - used to package the crafts

I have a huge pile of shredding to get through, I'll count that when it's done!

So I return to my counting with
1220+29=1249/2010

It's fab to see this thread still going strong

Speaking of shredding, DD got through about half of our shredding when it overheated. It has been over an hour and it still won't work. She was doing a great job only feeding it 3-4 pieces at a time and not shoving them, etc. She even took breaks for her own sanity. I hope it works again soon.

bummer, hope it's not wrecked!

I tossed a few things today and in the process found some toys that have been missing that are suitable for DS to play with, like the ball for the shape sorter (rather than just having a variety of shapes)

I have been throwing stuff away and donating with out keeping track. I think I'll start back in with the counting and give myself 25 for the last few weeks.

I find the biggest obstacle for us now is clearing out paperwork and managing it.

Hi!
I'm a late-joiner, but I have been feeling the spring/new year pull to de-clutter! We moved while I was pg w/ DD and I'm ashamed to say that she's nearly a year old (I'm talking in days) and we STILL have boxes.

So, I'm starting today. Is it okay with you all if I join in?
Here's my weakness:
Stuff that I think has monetary values. Cash is tight and I find myself holding onto things that I think I will list on CL or ebay or whatnot.... and then I never do :P
So, my personal challenge is to DONATE the stuff and GET IT OUT.
I won't count it until it is literally, actually out of the house

whew. Gonna start now. Thanks for listening.

whew! I just tackled one of the worst shelves in our living room. It's still not great, but I got rid of 17 CD ROM games to sell (or toss after the swap if no one wants them) and about 50 other CD related items, either CDs, cases, etc. And there's a hefty bit of paper to be recycled too.

Count for today: 70

And I managed to find the last peice of paper that I needed to be able to file my taxes on that shelf too, so I can make the phone call to the accountant tomorrow and take it all in. yay!
