My DH likes to grill, and he doesnt' care the weather, he'll do it year round...
My SIL uses her cast iron dutch oven but puts it in her kitchen oven... um... yeah, when I bust out the dutch oven I put it in the fire pit...but no, we don't usually do that in winter.

Anyone going to the Beer and Barely Wine Festival?

I would like to go, I'll see if I can swing it.

I grew up in NY and a lot of people would grill outside in the winter.

I've never been to the zoo storytime. How is it?

orthopedic surgeon in anchorage??

Do any of you have a recommendation for an orthopedic surgeon/arm specialist in Anchorage? DH has a partially torn bicep tendon and needs surgery, but we need a 2nd opinion.

I'm a little paranoid b/c of this doesn't get fixed right he's gotta find a new job. B/c he's currently on light-duty, the director just pulled his law enforcement commission. Its not that I want him wrestling thugs, but he needs to be "commissionable" (if thats a word) to do his job.

I know some of you know that Karen (Icequeen in ak) has been going through a lot with her mother's illness.

She just found out today that, pancreatic cancer added to the mix, her mother's liver is not saveable and they're only going to be able to provide palliative hospice care.

Please send her any good thoughts you may have. This is a huge loss for Em, for Karen, and for all of us.

Thanks,

Penelope

I just came to post for everyone who does, to pray for Karen and her family.

She and her family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Karen posted today that her mom's bilirubin levels dropped 25% overnight, and the doctors say they don't know why. That's something good to hear.

I hope everyone is staying warm. We're so busy right now, with swimming, martial arts, W's work schedule, youth court assignments and grades being due to the homeschool office...sigh. I really like to hibernate in winter, but this 6 day a week thing (and often 7 with the kids' various activities) is making hibernation impossible!

The Noel Wien Library has some neat stuff coming up for those of you in or near Fbks. THey have an online schedule, but one of the events is the movie "Up" for teenagers (my teens have been on the YA Library Group since its inception, so this is another one of their "things"). Anyone in 7th grade and up can come, no siblings or parents allowed. Jan 29.

They're also showing a family movie this weekend. I can't find it's title!

And of course there is always Mother Moose and 3+ storytime. We love our library!

Library schedule link is here:

Keep warm!

Hello ladies,
Coming back after a very nice break.
I decided to start fresh, with a new account and a more anonymous name.

DH and I are getting ready for a homestudy.
We hope to foster/adopt in the near future.
Our house looks like a tornado went through it, as I go through everything, and finish dejunking every corner and closet, and child proof as needed.
We are thankful that all safety requirments are in place, since they had to be done to the house when we bought it.

The co-op we are a part of, has asked me to offer classes later on this year, so I have that stuff on the radar, as well as getting together items for the co-op grab bags for the Valley Woman's Show this spring.

Oh that is great. Thanks for the update. I haven't been to facebook yet today.

Welcome back BubblingB. Sounds like very exciting things are in your future. Good luck with that.

Is everyone hitting the midwinter doldrums? Our light IS coming back, it's just taking a while huh.

Okay I have a crazy, silly first time AK mama questions...What do you do if you happen upon a moose or a bear (not now hopefully). I lived in fairbanks before kids and it wasn't really a problem or thought on my mind. I feel like it is immobilzing me or at least one more excuse not to go outside. So if anyone has some words of wisdom it would be helpful. I keep hearing these stories of people getting trampled. I DONT RUN FAST AT ALL!!!!

Bear safety:

You can also request a packet on bear safety from:

http://www.nps.gov/aplic/fieldtrip/bear_safety.html (There is also a PDF doc printable option, if you don't want to send away).

Moose safety:

As far as what to teach your kids, it's pretty simple: If they see a bear, they need to tell a grownup. Never run from a bear, and since you live in Anch, chances of running across one are slimmer than if you live in a small town.

Follow all the basic camping safety rules (no food in tent, etc).

For moose: Don't try to get close. Keep a tree at least between you and the moose as you work your way into the house or car. Never feed a moose or bear, obviously.

There is no one-size-fits-all set of rules. But you're not likely to have to worry about these things.

I certainly don't think you need to worry about getting trampled. That almost only ever happens to moose that have been tortured by kids, poked with sticks, lost their babies through confusion, etc. Find a tree or car, get behind it, or in a house if you can. Leave the moose alone, they aren't interested in people.

love, p

I live in Anchorage, southside-ish area, and ran into 4 bears! this past summer. All with my 4 young kiddos. Lived here many many years, and that had never happened before. I also run into moose weekly if I'm out walking my kids to school. It does freak me out a bit, mostly because I'm always with my kids.

For me- school is back in session- so there is my attention level.

Today, I have school until 2:00, meeting until 3:00, go pick up two kiddos from school and stuff SOMETHING down their throats because by 5:00 I have to be to my prenatal appt.

That's my life (I have been up and running around since 5am).
