Potette

Am i right that the Potette can be a toilet seat insert AND a tiny seated (nearly squat) toilet for my kiddo?

he's getting to the point where he is hard to hold in his normal holds--particularly during long poos (my back hurts doing it!)--and i'm looking to transition him to a potty.

i remember that a friend of mine brought a potette to one of our EC meetings (and i emailed our group, but i thought i would check here too), and i think it was the one where the legs could open straight out (and thus sit over the toilet seat and the seat of the potette would fit inside), and also could be 90 degrees down and be a little seat.

(she also suggested plastic bags from grocery stores or small trash liners with a paper towel in for disposable refills).

anyway, i was curious because the little potty we have (bjorn) is a drum, and he prefers to be pottied over the toilet *or* in the tub. and, he isn't willing to just sit on the toilet; he wants to be held.

i'm not going to pressure him; i don't mind holding him for the quickie pees, but when he's pooping, he can take his time! LOL

so i'd like to transition him over to sitting on it.

it's because he looks like he's nearly two. he's a TALL 16 mo baby (34 in) and weighs between 25 and 30 lbs (i don't weigh him often. it's hard for me to hold my back straight in a squat-like position to hold him on the potty; and i bend at the waist so that there is strain on my back.

just gotta find a new way. anyone use it?

i just bought one yesterday for my dd. She will only go on her BBLP and I bought this to use on the go. It does do both, fold out to use on the potty or have little legs to use as it's own potty. I have tried to use it with the legs down on the toilet to simulate like she is using a BBLP but over a toilet so that if we are out I can just put it on a regular toilet. It worked okay, but it doesn't fit very well b/c it's barely wider than the opening of the toilet. But I am hoping this can be used unitl she gets used to sitting on a big toilet. She doesn't seem to mind it at all, so if your little one likes the BBLP, they will probably like this potty.

Also try doing something interesting and distracting when you sit him down. For instance, Lina loves it when I give her her toothbrush when I know she has to go but she thinks she needs to run around.

well, i don't know what a BBLP (baby bjorn little potty?) is, but i do know that he doesn't use any form of little potty what so ever. i've tried him on the baby potties in general, but he won't use them.

i think it's because i've held him over the toilet pretty much the whole time (sink also, and he used the tub for poop for a bit too). so, he's very used to using a toilet, with the hold where he's facing toward the flush.

and that's probably his biggest interest, but he knows "wait!" and so he'll wait until he's done to flush, and we do "brown-flush, yellow-wait."

ew. lol

anyway, he also brushes his teeth twice a day, so it's not a big thing to hold one and i don't want it in the toilet. he knows he can't hold anything while being held over the potty because i don't want to have to fish it out before flushing. bleh.

i would like to encourage him to start using it in the "right" seated way, and i thought that this might help.

not sure though. i'm going to ahve to think about it. i hate buying objects that i don't use. like the little potty that i have.

hmm, i'm thinking maybe a song, though.

when it's time to put a diaper on him, we do "row your boat" or the alphabet song for him. when he wants a diaper on (he's ready for pants or something after diaper free time), he'll come up to me and sing "row row row boat EEM! er-lee er-lee er-lee er-lee! IFE, reem!" cute really.

perhaps if there is a specific song that we sing while sitting on the potty. that MIGHT work. hmm.

i need a song. twinkle twinkle little star might work.

I LOVE my potette. It CAN be used as a toilet seat reducer, but my daughter prefers to use a small potty, so I never bothered using the reducer feature.

The bags were RIDICULOUS expensive (10 bags for $7.99), so I made myself a little waterproof fabric liner and I line the inside with a prefold diaper (or face cloth, or anything that will absorb the urine).

It usually stays in my car, but it fits perfectly in my diaper bag so on days like today when I went visiting friends and we spent some time outside at a bonfire, it was the perfect potty to bring along.

The one you want is called the Potette Plus. It is a little potty and a toilet seat.

DD did not want to sit on the toilet. I bought her the padded Munchkin seat w/ handles. It is v cushy and comfy w/ the added security for the lo of having the handles. She will often read herself a book while sitting, esp when it is poop. Now she sits on the toilet w/ no problems and will use a folding seat that we keep in the diaper bag, too.

it looks like a lot of the seats out there say that they are not good for boys for various reasons (urine spraying, urine getting caught on the seat, penises getting caught or cut on the seats, etc).

whew, more research involved then.

I would definitely not use it as an every day reducer, regardless of gender. It's designed as a travel potty, so you can use it on a public toilet (like in a mall), or a potty (like at a park).

If a travel potty is what you're looking for, there's none other I would use, personally. But if you're looking for a potty for at home use, then I agree with looking elsewhere.

i'm looking for one that i can use all the time. i don't like having multiples of the same thing, and we're as much out as we're in.

today, DH tried him on the BBLP and he absolutely refused and pointed at the toilet and wanted to be held over it. because he has been sick the last 24 hrs (vomit and diarrhea), we held him, but once he's straightened out we're going to try just using the toilet as is at home (with us holding him while he sits on the seat), and then using a travel one for public toilets.

but, i would use it in my own home too. it is likely that we'll only have one bathroom in NZ (it's not common to have many bathrooms in most homes; just one), and so keeping a seat in the seat at home would be a bit much.

just looking for way to transition him.
