Help me design a workout for my goal: Hike up the Great Bear dune in MI

In July/Aug next year we plan to vacation on Lake Michigan again (beautiful area with dozens of pristine beaches). There are huge dunes in the area that people climb and hike on. Last year, we were too tired (DD is such a crappy sleeper) and out of shape (both DH and I) to attempt climbing the big dunes there.

So, this year, we want to do it.

What kind of work out would you suggest?

I have an elliptical at home and do some cardio kickboxing too (I have a decent martial arts background). In good weather, I walk the dogs every so often. Occasionally I run the stairs in the house too. Consistency has been a HUGE problem due to DD's toddler chaos so I need to work on that.

However, I was wondering if just working out more would be enough. What would your workout be for dune climbing?

I think the one big dune is 500 feet up. It's okay if it's a good workout, but I'd like to a) be able to make the climb and b) not be too sore.

P.S. No running. I have asthma and it hates running. Also, it's winter which means ice making outdoor stuff difficult.

I don't have any suggestions but your post caught my eye. What a great time you'll have! I love the dunes, so amazing

Thanks!

I ran the stairs last night 12 times, 144 stairs just to start off the new year right. Had to take an inhaler half way through since I'm so out of shape. Fortunately, the more I exercise, the better I breathe.

Tomorrow I need to workout again. I guess for the moment I'm focusing on consistency and doing the stairs.

I also ordered a T-Tapp dvd to try.

I was going to suggest stairs, so awesome that you are already doing that!

I'd also add some weight training if possible, and do squats and lunges to really strengthen your lower body.

This is a great goal to look forward to and train for! Good for you! Keep us posted and let us know how it goes.

Hi - I was in your shoes last year. I had actually "won the lottery" for a permit to hike Mt. Whitney and needed to get my heart and muscles prepped for the adventure. I did a lot of cardio, running and interval training. I also did weight training for my legs and back (was carrying a 47 pound pack for three days!). I think there were a couple of specialized things I did that helped - 1) walk on the treadmill at a moderate pace, at a high incline angle, varying degrees for varying minutes, to help with getting used to going up, up, up, 2) walking sideways at a less extreme angle; and 3) walking up and DOWN the stairs at a local 10 story parking garage. Up can be hard on the heart, lungs and legs muscles, but DOWN - ah, that was hard on my knees and back.

I did it (with my 9 and 12 year olds - they are awesome!), but I have to say it was probably the hardest thing I have ever done!

Good luck - and happy hiking!
